Rocks! Great Museum! One of the best out of the 100's I've ever visited. Wonderful presentation of the area's rich and diverse history, Lexington County, South Carolina.
The Museum offers 36 historic structures over 7 acres of historic land. A few of the architectural wonders are on The National Register of Historic Places. Their main focus is on the daily life of the inhabitants of Lexington County from 1771-1860. They offer wonderfully guided tours by an extremely knowledgable staff.
The county is one of the fastest growing counties in America. With all the growth comes a need for balance between progress and preservation. They have done an excellent job in preserving the areas tremendously rich history. If not for sherman they'd have so much more but I suppose that is in and in it of itself part of the history. There are many instances that show the strength and fortitude of Lexington's inhabitants and their ability to overcome his _ to rebuild their community into an area with great education, commerce, tourism, natural wonders, preservation, etcetera all while maintaining a balance between the past, present and the future.
The Museum from a physical standpoint offers everything from historical homes to ephemera to Native American artifacts to inventions from the area to any aspect that represents the county's historical past. They offer special activities for kids and adults. If you think that you might have something historically important to the area's history please see below. Also, please overlook any typos. This was not easy to type using a phone!
Great staff, if you're looking to donate local historical* items they will not sit in a basement or get sold, like many larger corporate-type museums. They will be displayed. *Caveat, Historically important to the area not just anything that is emotionally important to you but is important from a historical perspective to the area. The staff is wonderful. Please consult with them concerning anything you feel might be important to the museum. It's a donation so it could be of help on your taxes or in some instances items are purchased but due to very limited funds this route is not the norm. The most important thing is it will be preserved and presented to the public. You and your family can have access to it. They've never sold a donation or it end up stuff in a basement only to get broken, stolen, rot, etcetera. Please see them concerning anything you might have before making any decisions based...
Read moreA Historical Gem with Exceptional Staff I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Lexington County Museum, and I can't say enough about what a delightful experience it was. From the moment I stepped onto the grounds, I was transported back in time to a place that oozes history and charm.
The museum itself is a true gem. The collection of historical buildings, artifacts, and exhibits is impressive and meticulously maintained. It's evident that a lot of love and care goes into preserving Lexington County's rich history. I particularly enjoyed exploring the old homes and businesses, each with its own unique story to tell.
However, what truly sets this museum apart is its staff. The employees and volunteers are some of the most knowledgeable and passionate individuals I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. They are not just there to guide you through the exhibits; they are there to share their deep knowledge, answer questions, and engage in meaningful conversations about the history of the area.
I had the privilege of taking a guided tour with one of the museum's staff members, and it was a highlight of my visit. Their enthusiasm and storytelling skills brought history to life in a way that was both educational and entertaining. It's clear that they are genuinely invested in preserving and sharing the heritage of Lexington County.
The level of hospitality and warmth I encountered during my visit was outstanding. Whether it was a friendly greeting at the entrance or a helpful recommendation for places to explore in the area, the staff went above and beyond to ensure that my visit was enjoyable and informative.
In summary, the Lexington County Museum is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in history. It's a place where the past comes alive, and the employees make that experience truly exceptional. Kudos to the dedicated team for their outstanding work in preserving and sharing this treasure trove of history. I can't wait to return for another...
Read moreThis was a great experience, especially for the price - only $5 (cash or check only, no cards.) The Fox house was the original house at this location, and they've moved several other buildings to this location for a great overview of early Lexington County history and people. I may not have seen it at its best - with reenactors in costume, and some of the buildings were closed for renovations, including the Fox House itself, which was disappointing. But for $5, I can try to come back later.
You start the tour across the street from the Fox house with some of the earliest cabins from the area, including a one-room schoolhouse. And they're all set up as if the people just left and will be back soon, so that's pretty cool. Then behind the Fox House, there is a garden, several smaller outbuildings, a pretty pigeon house, barns, another cabin, and a sad little barn/hut that was for "slave quarantine" - it's pretty sad, but I'm glad they talk about it. There's also an outdoor classroom back there, and they usually host several school groups, so as things return to normal, it may be a lot more crowded than...
