This was an interesting place to visit. If you are a religious history fanatic, or a Latter-day Saint, this place is for you! I think that this site is geared heavily towards Mormons. I am guessing that the majority of visitors here are active participants in the faith. If you are not a Latter-day Saint, I do not think you will not find this site particularly interesting. It presents a piece of history that the faith treasures deeply. It's also part of the historical story of one of the largest and wealthiest religions that America has ever produced. It seems that the reviews on this place are heavily skewed positive - mainly because most Latter-day Saints visit here and write positive reviews, this is the place where founder/prophet Joseph Smith was incarcerated. Which is alright! I did not find it incredibly captivating. I was expecting to see the original jail, however it was a model of what the jail would have looked like in the early 1800s. The stories relied heavily on "feeling" and stories (which many religions do) but it was fascinating to learn about Joseph Smith. There are so many stories, perspectives on history, and I continue to learn and read. The people here were incredibly kind, very generous, and nice to us. There wasn't a ton of parking but it wasn't very busy and we were able to find a spot.

This review is not a religious endorsement. The grounds and the facility are very nice along with the staff who are very professional and friendly. What you see is a replica of what is believed the original jail looked like, which is built on the foundation of the original prison. This prison is where Joseph Smith the founder of the Mormon church, Church of Latter-Day Saints, was incarcerated for a few months when the members of the Latter-Day Saints Church were being exterminated (forced to leave by any means) from Missouri. If I understood correctly this is where Joseph Smith was inspired to write the Doctrine and Covenants used as scripture by their church today. You will learn about Mormon history in Missouri. The tours are free to the public, last about an hour, and are well done. Regardless of whether or not you are religious I recommend it for those interested in the history of the region.

Due to the Covid19, this facility is closed for in person visits. Virtual tours are available. The number is located in the attached picture. You could call this facility a historic part of Mormon history. Mormon is a nickname, but not the name of the church. The actual name of the church is " The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". This jail is where the 1st prophet of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" was imprisoned for almost 6 months. To learn and understand even more of the history of this amazing church, check out the virtual tours being offered at the Independence Visitor Center for "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints"

My organization toured this site, while some of our clients found it interesting, one in particular found it to be difficult, the staff unfriendly and unsympathetic. My friend with disabilities escaped to the men's room. His staff was close by, but despite this, the men of this organization took it upon themselves to try and force him out of the men's room. The staff explained multiple times that they had control of the situation, that their interference was only making the situation worse. WHY? Why did they continue to touch this individual, try to force him out when it was clear he was uncomfortable. WHY? Why did these men continue to ignore the request of the assigned staff? Some who know me would say this is a rather tame review. If you have a friend with disabilities of color, or with a female staff, I would not recommend this location. The above star is only because it won't let me...
