There are good hearted people at this church, with good intentions, but they are very much in danger of replicated the negative experience that hillsong is currently being outed for. I was getting out of an abusive relationship and they scooped me up, it felt like a blessing, but it became immense pressure. Without any training, or help for why I was there I was put on a volunteer team and then in leadership. I tried saying that I needed help, but was constantly asked to give. The church would have various member reach out on a regular basis pressuring me to attend expensive events that were meant to raise money. Very often saying “we aren’t a cult” - meanwhile there is a cult like experience. It’s the cool kid vibe and it seems to lack maturity and wisdom. Use your own wisdom but tread with caution. They will be welcoming, abundantly so and I typically think that is beautiful, but in the end it felt like a fish hook to use me. When we so deeply desire belonging we might accept it in forms that can be damaging.
