Waited forever for a documentary to air. It was going to be at the No Ho Laemmle but then changed to the Royal. I had never been to the Royal. It kinda sucked. The bathrooms were dirty- there were weeks of dust on the bases of the toilets. While peeing I looked through to the other stall and it looked like Grey Garden housekeeping. I also wonder if they make the staff clean the bathroom instead of having a proper cleaning crew. The AC in Theatre 1 was barely working. It was hot. And the parking is tricky. The little lot fills quickly, and we couldn't find street parking for many blocks. Seems like others were in the same boat as we were, and lots of others parked in the Bank of America lot and hoped our janky unofficial parking would be overlooked. I commented that it seems like everyone parks illegally in the Bank of America lot to the ticket taker, and he made a comment about just listen for the sirens. Oh? Ugh. Just remembering why I don't like going to the West Side. But parking is a nightmare everywhere, so I don't count that hard against them, but the cleanliness and AC? Stars go way...

Laemmle's Royal Theatre is located on the edge of Santa Monica near Sawtelle and has a wide range of indie films. You have to check it out if you enjoy new local experiences!
We saw Loving Vincent, which was one of the most breathtaking film experiences I've ever had. It was created entirely by painting each frame - 80,000 in all. You might not get the opportunity to see something like this in a large chain movie theatre, which is why places like Laemmle's are so important in the community!
The ticket taker was super friendly and we even got a free refill on our large popcorn. It's reasonable for just $5.75 and they use REAL butter. No weird chemical stuff.
Oh, I'll be back.
Pro Tips: Ask for your popcorn refill when you order because they'll give it to you in a cardboard box to bring to your seat (good if you're in a group of people) Street parking is tough so try the garage off of...
Read moreWhat a great little "nabe" or neighborhood theater, converted into a multiplex! The seats, screen and sound system were completely remodeled, with excellent seats! They aren't the easy-lounger kind, but still extremely comfortable. They often have guests speaking in their main auditorium, but have them speak from the floor of the seats, and NOT from the stage! Fine if you're in the first two rows, but really SUCKS if you aren't. They need to put guest speakers on the stage. This is a Laemmle theater, which has a well-deserved reputation for providing the hottest new releases on the arthouse circuit, often straight from the film festivals. This ain't no LANDMARK theater showing you the latest Marvel comic book movie. They have an interesting program for their fans where I think you buy a card that's a gift card that entitles you to discounts for snacks and movie pricing specials. Be careful about parking in the neighborhood! The parking tickets can be expensive if you don't...
