I hate to write this because I know we weren't the best players, but we did not have a good time.
Without spoiling anything, there were multiple times where it felt like the GM wasn't paying attention to us. We read some instructions, did as they said, and nothing happened. We were even loudly discussing whether that was the correct action, so if the GM was listening, they should have known to look and see if we were doing it. Since nothing happened, we figured we were wrong and wandered off to a different room entirely. We came back later, and when we asked for a hint, we stood there for like 30 seconds waving our arms and asking for help with no answer. She walked us through the entire puzzle, and said "did you do action" and we said yes, and she said "for long enough?" And when we went to do it, it progressed instantly. So I genuinely think she wasn't paying attention the first time we did it.
The next times we asked for hints, she would start at the beginning of the puzzle and slowly walk us through it, even though we knew 90% and just needed a small nudge in the right direction. It was like she wasn't watching to see where in the puzzle we were at, and we wasted time because she was getting up to speed with where exactly we were.
Another element was similar, where we needed to have two people do something at the same exact time, and my friend and I definitely did, and commented loudly how we were testing it, that it wasn't working, so either they use mechanical parts that are finicky, or she wasn't paying attention to push the button to let us progress.
The room was also incredibly dark. We got a warning that she was biased against one part, so she would let us use our flashlights, but when that part came, she didn't tell us. We were frantically looking at the correct areas, and could not see anything, and it wasn't until we asked for a hint that she told us we could use our flashlights. I really thought they would come out with a heads up like "this is the flashlight part." We wasted more time on this.
We ran out of time literally as we got the last puzzle in our hands, and I looked at it and knew what we needed to do. If we had been able to progress when we did the correct action, and weren't wandering around lost because of it, we would have had time to finish.
We aren't amazing puzzlers, we definitely would have needed hints, but I've never failed an escape room before. We've had other gamemasters who not only knew exactly where we were in the puzzle, but who knew how to give us a nudge when time was getting away from us. We didn't feel like our GM was paying attention to us at all. We paid a lot of money and...
Read moreI have done countless of escape rooms at various different locations and my experiences at lamaze are usually great. Fun rooms and wonderful game masters. I went tonight for the Garretts room and left extremely disheartened for the game masters made it one of the most terrible experiences. The room itself is absolutely amazing, no doubt. But the game master for us tonight started without even introducing his name to us and I still do not know his name. He rushed through the intro story and rules before putting us in the room. At one of the parts, we were admiring a reveal and before we even got a chance to interact with it properly, he just yelled "PUSH!" in an irritated tone. A different game master met with us at the end - who we did not get the name of either - and made our exit awkward and uncomfortable. Neither of the men congratulated us for escaping the room successfully nor told us anything regarding how we did, thanking us for coming, or spoke any other words to us unless we spoke to them first. We felt unwelcomed, uncomfortable, and we left the location feeling terrible for what should have been a fun time. The two men did not tell us their names but I do wish there could be a way to have some better training around so no one else has to go through the same experience we did. Edit: pictures were not offered at all either at the end. We were lead to our belongings and were silently ushered out to the lobby where the awkward exchanges occurred. With little to no words exchanged and no "Thank you for coming" or anything of the sort, we were left standing, wondering "what now? Do we...

Our group of two completed Whatever Happened To The Garrets and just had such an absolute blast doing it. Excellent set design, so many fun and clever little touches. Loved all of the puzzles. Everything made sense, and the few times we got hung up our GM (also the owner) knew exactly how to push us in the right direction or sometimes even refuse to give us a clue when he knew we were allllllmost able to solve it. Plenty of fun twists and turns that all made sense within the established narrative as well.
Can't recommend it enough to fellow enthusiasts. Though I may steer first timers away from this game and into Tombstone instead, which we decided to play immediately after the first game. This is also a fantastic room with so many wonderful set interactions. Straight up a fun time that would be a perfect introduction to escape rooms.
Overall our afternoon at the West LA location of Maze Rooms was just top notch from...
