I was very disappointed with my sales rep’s attitude and behavior. Since my previous car was considered a total loss, I had to purchase a new one. That’s when I chose Toyota of Downtown L.A., as I was considering either a Corolla Hybrid or a Prius Hybrid. Fortunately, it was around the Labor Day sale, and I test-drove the Corolla Hybrid before deciding to lease it.
I signed all the paperwork and made the down payment for the lease on the same day I visited the dealership. Because of the Labor Day weekend, I had a trip planned to San Francisco and scheduled to pick up my new car after the holiday. However, when I went back, my sales rep didn’t show up, and even his manager wasn’t there. The receptionist told me that my sales rep was out of town and had taken both sets of keys to my new car with him. At that moment, I lost all trust and confidence in him.
I even spoke with him on the phone, but instead of offering a sincere apology, he gave me excuses and asked me to reschedule. I was dumbfounded by his unprofessional behavior, which made no sense to me. I had rented a car in the meantime and scheduled to return it the same day I was supposed to pick up my new car—my only day off. I also needed a car to drive to work the following day.
To make matters worse, my sales rep suddenly hung up the phone while I was still speaking. I felt extremely disrespected and offended by the way he treated me, even after I had completed all the paperwork. I had even compromised for his convenience by finishing everything before the end of the month, yet he still treated me poorly and failed to communicate in advance.

We brought our vehicle in due to a serious safety issue — it was stalling and shutting off on a steep driveway. Toyota pushed unrelated preventive maintenance as the solution, without properly identifying the root cause through diagnostic testing. We declined the upsell because we were focused on the safety issue, not maintenance.
Toyota initially dismissed our concerns. Only after we insisted they continue diagnosing the issue did they finally replicate the stalling and shutting off, triggering a fault code. Despite identifying a problem, the dealership never disclosed any costs for the repairs during this process.
We were told by the service manager, Danny, that there would be no charge because it was an issue they were able to “fix.” But when we arrived to pick up the car, the assistant manager contradicted that and said there was a charge — without explanation or a breakdown of costs. We were forced to pay over $600 to retrieve our vehicle, even though we never approved the charge.
We filed a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs – Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). The BAR investigated and confirmed that Toyota Downtown LA violated our consumer rights. As of today, we still haven’t received a refund or proper resolution.
