Good: Right across the LA conference center. Maintenance service is really responsive after I showed her the issues I was having and gave her some feedback.
Pro-tip: A regular interior room is very small. As you open the door, the bathroom sink is immediately next to you; the sink faces you and is within arm’s reach. ln addition, there is barely room at the foot of the bed for you to walk to the other side of the bed. Splurge for the corner room or if you have status ask for an upgrade. The corner is larger and has windows on two sides of the room to make it feel even larger.
To Improve: Rooms need to be functional and help us be environmentally conscious. When I checked into my room, so many things were just weird. There were no towel hooks to hang up used towels for re use. The sink had noticeable damage inside the sink’s bowl. After I used the sink to wash my hands, I found out why; the faucet handle fell off when I tried to turn on the water. Of course, the heavy handle fell in the sink right where all the damages were The shower only had hot and hotter water. It was so dark in the room, even with the bedside light, “hall light”, bathroom light, and the little lamp— luckily I didn’t bring blue socks and black socks that needed to be matched or black pants for certain outfits vs blue because we know you can’t tell those colors apart when it’s dark. The room was so hot even though I lowered the temperature. They have a motion sensor that shuts off the AC if they don’t sense motion but it is centered right over the bed. Luckily, when the maintenance person showed up, I first told her about my AC issue; that was the thing that I had to get. I was sweating in my sleep the night before in the room. The maintenance person said she switched the motion detection so that the AC would not shut off. So basically, if you’re not moving enough in your sleep, the AC won’t turn on. WTH?! I also just provided her some feedback of the other issues I had and showed her the bathroom. She said there should be a hook in the bathroom and said she would add one. She also said the cleaners were supposed to let maintenance know about the falling sink handles because it’s a common thing. I told her about the showers water temperature and she went to the shower faucet and was able to easily pull it off. Seems that the shower faucet also has the same problem as the sink faucet. Whoever put the shower faucet back on did it wrong and so I wasn’t able to select the cold and warm water. The next day the maintenance person fixed everything that she could. The only thing she cannot fix was the amount of light in the room at night.
Bad: The Moxy hotel is actually attached to another sister hotel called AC Hotel. The Moxy address takes you to one side of the hotel, but the actual entrance is on the back side of the hotel (AC hotel address). On the back side, are two unmarked doors on different ends. No one was there when I arrived around 3pm Sunday so I picked a door and there was no lobby but they elevators. I check the elevators and press the button for the lobby. After standing in line to check in at the lobby, I was told that I was in at AC hotel, and my reservation is for the sister hotel. I would have to take the elevators back down to the first floor. I made my way to a bank of unmarked elevators but there was no first floor on the buttons. I selected the floor with the gym. When I got out, I couldn’t find anything that pointed me to the Moxie. I got back in what turned out to be the other set of elevators and was able to ride the elevator to the first floor. This time I was in the first floor of the Moxy. This was a horrible experience. They need to have better signage on the doors and in the elevator banks to tell you which hotel the elevators are for in which floors. Moxie and AC hotel share the same restaurants and pool. Be warned that the pool can be closed for private parties on weekends and several hotel guests were upset they couldn’t...
Read moreI live here in LA, but was coming back from vacation from Tokyo, Japan - so I figured "why not" on a holiday weekend to treat myself further as they had a music event the same day. Luckily the Pool Party Event was worth it...but I checked out early at around 10pm after booking an overnight stay.
PARKING: In short, went to the valet twice in need of my car (once to retrieve water I left in my car, and the second time to leave). The 1st time took over 10 minutes to retrieve my car but the thing was I was the ONLY customer waiting (was obviously long for valet because the attendant apologized to me for waiting), and the second time to leave took nearly twenty minutes (because staff put the key in the wrong holder spot - meanwhile I saw people in line behind me, driving out the parking lot with their cars before me just simply walking to go get their car.
ELEVATORS: Paying nearly $300 for 1 night as a GUEST, you'd think this would give you more freedom to use something as simple as the elevator. But no. The amount of times I had to go outside, or to a different side of the building, or a secret entrance way, or whatever just to get to-and-from the Pool Party (which the venue is attached to the hotel), was bonkers ridiculous. So many other guests shared stories in the elevator about them not understanding why their cards don't work for some floors, but do for others. (*I understand it's LA and the sheen of "exclusive-access" is a selling point...but this is no Beverly Hilton. Like, relax).
ROOM: Even though I was at the Pool Party event that was advertised from 2pm-8pm and had fun there - the thumping of the music continued well into the night and I had a room right over the pool During they day its pretty cool, but at night, we all want some type of sleep (if we're not doing...extra activity which clearly this hotel is only functional for). I simply wanted to turn on the TV...the remote control was hardly functional, kept freezing up every time after I tried to change or select a channel or change volume.. Then I asked for a new remote, which they aptly delivered shortly after...but THAT remote didn't work that well either. So I said, I'll just use WiFi from my laptop....and their "free" WiFi never allowed me to connect after several attempts (felt like a scam because the button to simply connect would not work, but button to "book another stay with Marriot" happened to be working just fine). Plus city sirens kept blaring all through the night. I simply felt it just isn't worth it. This is the point where I was fed up and decided to check out early.
Long story short. staff operated like the guests: fresh-out-of-college 20-somethings running around lost on what to do, the only difference was they were sober. I would have asked for a refund but 1) not sure Moxy offers it 2) even if they did, I don't think staff would have known how to conduct one...The building has a very confusing layout as far as entering and exiting, noise reduction outside of the room is very limited if there is an event or general LA sirens going on, paying for extra things (valet, bigger room, etc.) is not worth it, etc.. As soon as I got back to my actual home around 11pm PST, I was so relieved. $300 dollars down the drain, but at least I could be comfortable.
And I usually don't feel this strongly writing public reviews such as this, but in all honesty after coming back from a non-English speaking city for the first time - there was better communication over THERE between staff and guests, even with the language barrier. And they cost half as much and were way nicer in all areas of hospitality. Step up your game L.A./USA. ...
Read moreAfter nearly plowing into a man walking down the sidewalk, me and the besties found ourselves pulling up to the valet boys ready to take my car into the underworld. I had never experienced a valet situation and especially not at a hotel as posh as this one, so I was rather grateful both the front desk staff and valet boys were friendly and explained the process to me. Good thing we didn’t need my car for the rest of our stay because once she was whisked away, that was the last I saw of her until we checked out.
Anyway, the hotel itself is super boujee (if the $5 Fiji water in each room is anything to go by). They have a nice bar in the lobby and a cute coffee shop right next door. We were staying for Kcon and arrived a little before check-in time and were able to get in right away. Since there are so many floors, the elevator situation was interesting. We zoomed past each floor and it was… a ride. Everyone we rode with commented that their stomachs were flipping and flopping. I noticed that sensation a little, but it (surprisingly) didn’t affect me as much as it did for others. Anyway, since it was a busy weekend and every kpoppie stayed at this hotel, it always took a hot minute for the elevator to arrive. We didn’t see other sets of elevators, but only three elevators for how many floors/rooms there were, there should be more elevators for weekends like this. You’re across the street from the Staples Center; there should be more elevators. I don’t make the rules, I only want to see them enforced.
On to the actual room - wow. I don’t know if young, rich people don’t believe in having surfaces to set their things on, eat on, etc. but other than the nightstands and the tiny counter attached to the sink, there were zero tables of any kind in this room. We got a room with two full beds, and for three women staying there, it was cramped to say the least. But we were paying for the convenience of being super close to the Kcon festivities, so it was what it was. The one pro of this room was the multitude of hooks on the wall so at least we could hang bags from the wall (since there were no tables to put them).
Another thing, the sink was completely flat so I had to fill up my water bottle by filling up a cup of water and then pouring said cup into the bottle - repeatedly. Poor design choice. ANOTHER note, the door separating the toilet and the door separating the shower to the outside world were more see-through than anything! If someone was taking a shower, good luck to anyone wanting to use the sink (and the only table) at the same time because you had to divert your eyes in order to not see the person showering. I don’t know, I guess this hotel or the room was made for couples or something because it was just weird. Also, the doors for the toilet and shower might’ve been conjoined because the door to the toilet slid into the shower if the toilet door was opened.
Anyway, the beds were always clean and soft - I quite enjoyed my slumber in the bed. Unfortunately, one of my besties couldn’t say the same 🙁
The restaurant prices were outrageous and didn’t have many options for vegetarians, so we decided to order pizza instead.
Upon checking out, the valet situation was all right - we just had to go to the second level to get to the parking garage.
Long story short, the hotel was not worth the price tag, but it’s literally across the street from the Staples Center, so do with that...
