This is a really nice skating venue to check out! I went to the 9pm public skate session on Saturday, and I enjoyed my experience here for that time.
For positives: the ice is properly cleaned out between seasons, and starts off being pretty smooth to skate on the staff seems to put in effort in calling out people breaking the rules on ice (ex, roughing people up, skating dangerously, or throwing snow at each other). This usually comes in the form of PA messages. It shows they're taking the rules seriously. for those not skating, there are a lot of good seats to see your friends/ family as they skate. You have bleachers by the ice, and you have a cafeteria/table area overlooking the ice from above, with hockey games playing on a TV they offer rental skates here, with both figure skates and hockey skates available. I didn't try them (I had my own), but it's good that they have options for these.
For things I think could use some improvement: although the staff does call out problematic skaters at times (and to be fair, you'll always get these at any ice rink), I do think they let them get away with too much too often. Of note, I saw some skaters roughing some people up and skating dangerously close to others a few times on the ice, but the staff only called them out twice, when it was kind of being done all night. The staff only gave them a warning to kick them out when there was only 5min left during the session, which didn't seem like it had much effect. It's still good that the staff is trying something, however. the 9pm season is 1.5h, but the ice gets really bad at around 40min in (it starts to feel noticeably tougher to skate on). I think the experience would be nicer if they brought in the zamboni more often, though I imagine there are maybe time constraints for that. If not possible, I think even just having someone clear the ice occasionally would help; I saw random stuff dropped on the ice for a while, with no one really removing it. maybe just my opinion, but it might be nice to occasionally switch the direction we're supposed to skate in (so, clockwise instead of counter-clockwise). This can let folks practice turning right, or learning skating techniques in the opposite direction.
Overall, I would definitely suggest a visit, if you like skating. It's not a new as the Ice Rink we have in Seattle, but the staff seems more attentive, and they provide an option for night time skating on the Saturday (which the Seattle arena...
Read moreI had a birthday party at this place tonight for my 13 year old and it was the worst experience. I wouldn't even give it one star. The party was scheduled for 6:30, we did get there early at 6:00 so we waited in the lobby. There was no one at the front desk to help us. At about 6:20 there was still no one at the front desk and the tables were supposed to be set up by 6:30. I talked to the lady that works at the cafe and she was really nice and said that she would text them for me, someone finally answered her and said that they were on their way and should be there by 6:30 to set up. No one apologized to us for being late. They weren't helpful at all, the manager had a bad attitude when I tried to talk to him about things. I would never have a birthday party here again and don't even want to go back there at all. Highland Ice Arena is a lot better. The only good thing about this place was the cafe. The lady that worked there was a lot more helpful and nice than everyone else and she doesn't even work for the ice...
Read moreDo NOT attend Saturday night public sessions. Having frequented this session over the last few months, I have felt UNSAFE. I have been actively targeted by children and crashed into and tripped. Crowds of rowdy teenagers and kids that should be in bed at this hour to be honest. All I am doing is laps, completely predictable movement and these rouge hooligans are swinging around, cutting too close in front of me, as well as playing tag weaving thru everyone else, limbs and skates everywhere. I have fallen backwards each time and there's no supervision from staff or parents to enforce any sort of courtesy. I have NEVER felt unsafe on the ice and with Highland closed, this is the only rink and session that works with my schedule. This is the only exercise that works for me and don't want to give it up. Attached is a photo of my boot with the rusty scrape of a rental skate from the child harassing me and eventually swung his legs out at me. He was skating against the flow and knew what he was doing, it was...
