Mackinac Island Dining Review | Hits & Misses

I recently dined at Round Island and had a great experience, especially enjoying the outdoor seating with a lovely view. I ordered the whitefish sandwich, which was delicious, and the fries were outstanding. Having tried fries at various restaurants on Mackinac Island, I can confidently say these were the best! While the food was fantastic, my interaction with the waiter was a bit awkward. He seemed to take offense at something I said, replying with, "I was just asking!" There was some tension between us throughout the meal, but I believe it was a simple communication issue, as English didn’t seem to be his first language (his nametag mentioned he was from Croatia). Despite that, he did his best to provide good service, though I had some difficulty understanding him, which added to the confusion. The menu offers a variety of fish options, which I loved since I'm a big fan of seafood. However, I would love to see a classic fried fish and chips option. While the sautéed yellow perch and broiled whitefish sound great, I was really in the mood for some fried fish, and it wasn’t on the menu. I think adding fried perch with those amazing fries and a side of coleslaw would be a fantastic addition! People really enjoy a classic golden brown fried fish, and I hope the menu might include something like that in the future. 4/5 stars. Would eat here again and likely will when I return to the Island next year.

Wonderful service, but poor quality food. Started with breakfast for 9. Really happy with Nick's service, but the kitchen screwed up 3 if the 9 orders. We were all hungry, so we traded until everyone had an omelet they liked. Breakfast choices are very limited to just a handful of options. In all breakfast was ok maybe 3 out of 5. Lunch was awful, but our server, Aaron was a delight. We ordered tomato basil soup and grilled ham and cheese. Now the sandwich is not in the menu, but after checking with the kitchen, we were told they could do Canadian bacon on grilled cheese. We were delighted. Unfortunately cold soup arrived with no sandwich, then 20 minutes later a microwaved, cheese (velveeta )sandwich with regular bacon arrived. We hated to complain because Aaron went out of his way to make sure the kitchen would fulfill our request. Come on it's a grilled cheese, a 10yr old can make one. To make things worse, we both got ill immediately following eating here. On a positive note, they had a wonderful selection of Rye bourbon/whiskey. So, our recommendations are to come for drinks and the view, but don't eat.

My husband and I stayed on the island to celebrate our 1 year anniversary, and it was unfortunately a VERY disappointing experience eating at this place. We did not have a reservation, and the gentleman that seated us warned us that the kitchen was a bit backed up. No big deal. I am extremely understanding as I have worked in customer service and food service for years. I get the difficulties with it. They seated us at a great seat with a view of the water, so I figured a bit of a wait would be fine with that view. Our drink order was taken within 5 minutes, so far so good right? It pretty much dropped off there. I am shocked even now to say that we waited no less than 45 minutes for our server to come back. AT ALL.....

So long was our wait that neither myself or my husband even knew who our waiter was. People who had been seated either around the same time or way after us had gotten food already, and we had not even had our food order taken yet. I almost left without paying, and I normally would never even consider that. At this point, I was fuming. I flagged down a random server, and told him the situation. Our server FINALLY came with out bill, and only had us pay for one. He gave the lamest apology I ever received and was completely insincere. At this point, it is 8pm on a Sunday night in mid-October on Mackinac Island. I was so upset I would have rather gone to bed on an empty stomach than pay for horrible service. But the fact that the server made ZERO effort to make it right infuriated me. On our way out, I told the seating hostess I needed to speak to someone in charge immediately. The gentleman who seated us appeared. Now, I was definitely upset, but I calmly told him of the situation. He was extremely apologetic, and he definitely made it right in the end. He and our server for breakfast in the morning are the sole reason I even gave 3 stars. The food was pretty good, but I can promise you I will never wait that long again for this place. There is better food and better service on the island for a much better price. Don't make this place your...

My wife, son, and I arrived the other night and were looking to get dinner at the only place open. The restaurant was to close in little over an hour so I am wondering if that affected the quality. To start, there was no host to seat us though several staff made eye contact. We ended up asking the front desk of the resort and they were great helping us out. Once we did get a table, our server was great and attentive. The food quality was not at the standards advertised. My young son got chocolate milk where it was more chocolate syrup than milk (sides of the cup were coated in syrup). My wife's pan roasted chicken was surprising too, half a chicken breast. I get the marked up costs for importing foods, tourism and what not, but chicken breast is one of the more affordable meats so I'm not sure why you only get a half a chicken breast for that plate for the price, but we were told that is how it's done. Finally to my entree. I got the beef medallions (rare) with risotto. The risotto was definitely undercooked. It was crunchy and grainy, and barely edible. The first medallion was a perfect beautiful rare, but the other one was almost near raw (there were uncooked red spots on the outside of the medallion). I don't know if they weren't in the pan at the same time, but I was surprised by the inconsistency. We also got the smoked whitefish dip. We liked that alot though it almost needs more tomato jam to balance out the salty and savoryness of the dip. We want to try out Chiantis but we are worried they may share the same kitchen and get the same quality food as last night. We did have someone stop by and ask about the quality of the food, but we were so exhausted from the trip up that we didn't want to debate how our food was. Given that other reviews are more positive, maybe we just...

It seems Ike this would be a convenient spot if you’re staying at Mission Point, however be prepared to spend half your day there waiting on service. Absolutely atrocious. My Mom and I decided to try and have a quicker, nice dinner on our last night here. The place was sparse, so it seemed like we’d have good luck. We ordered an app and then 20 minutes later a different server came over and said our tab was closed and we weren’t ordering dinner. Excuse me what? Who said we weren’t ordering? When I told the waitress we’d like to order, she became extremely irritated. We put in our food order and I also put in a drink order at the same time. 30 mins later, food came, still no drink, and now completely empty water classes (we tried to flag 3 different people down to ask for water, all of which completely ignored us and kept walking). When the waitress did finally come back, she didn’t necessarily stop walking, her plan appeared to be a walk by to ask how everything was, and at that point, I had had enough of how poor the service was and how rude the staff was. I advised I ordered a drink 30 minutes ago and that we’ve been trying to flag people down for water (even going to the bar to stand to wait to ask) and when I was done, she simply stated, “your server went to dinner.” So anyways, food was dry and bland, service was awful and the worst part, it was EXPENSIVE! You’re better off going in to town to the Pink Pony or somewhere else for better food and better service. Absolutely do...
