The Henry Vilas Zoo is a phenomenal anomaly! They care for so many amazing animals and offer adventures for the whole family. It astounds me that you can enjoy this magnificent treasure for the low, low price of free. That's right, $0 entry regardless of your age or residency and $0 parking. They offer a pleasant little Cafe where you can order and eat your food in the presence of polar bears. The food was perfectly priced for what you get. My daughter is in love with their tree-inspired playground. We finally rode their "Conservation Carousel" (even though it's technically a merry-go-round as it offers more than just horses to mount.) My daughter was fascinated that she was able to sit on a caterpillar. We hope to take a tour on their mini-train on our next visit. The quaint gift shop offers a few items that help support the caretaking the various animals require. I would love to see the educational level of their toys to grow as I know kids are sponges that absorb knowledge faster than the animals they'd read about can swim or run. The real treasure that makes a world of difference to the zoo are their caring volunteers. Every volunteer I've had the pleasure of interacting with has been so kind and has passed on some of their knowledge to me and my family. Their time and efforts deserves so much respect and I thank them all for having such passion for what they do. I can't wait to return and see more that there is to explore in this gem that Madison has.

Vilas Park has a little of everything. One of two of more unusual items are a tree recognized by the National Arborist Association and the International Society of Arborculture as having been here since the signing of the US Constitution. The other is the Start/Finish line for a 10K course through the park, UW Arboretum, and Monroe Street area of Madison WI. The 10-K course honors famed Wisconsin runners on each of the mileposts. The trail is a 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) loop, so there are six mile-marker posts, each bearing the name of an Olympic distance runner who lived in Madison. In order, they are: Suzy Favor Hamilton ’91 Olympic Games in 1992, 1996, 2000* Rod DeHaven 2000 Olympics, trained in Madison Gabe Jennings 2000 Olympics, grew up in Madison Pascal Dobert ’97 2000 Olympics Cindy Bremser ’74, MS’85 1984 Olympics Steve Lacy ’78 the first Badger to break the four-minute mile, 1984 Olympics

We absolutely love this zoo and have been many times. There are 2 playgrounds right next to the zoo with a couple picnic tables but no bathrooms. If you walk back behind the playground there's a lovely bridge. This last time we saw a ton of turtles what I think was a snapping turtle. There are lots of big rocks that are perfect to climb on to get close to the water. During the summer the water is covered in lilies and it is just beautiful. Past the bridge you can walk along the lake and it will lead you to the back entrance of the zoo. We went mid-April last time and they were still cleaning the exhibits but there was still lots to see. The mama orangutan has her baby with her. The alligator was inside the reptile house and at one point snapped at the glass pane. And the grizzly bear was coming right up to us. It's never a dull trip!

Always 5 stars! Sadly the giraffe had been moved, so we didn't get to see them. But there were a lot of other animals to see. The riger was napping behind his favorite rock. The rhinoceros was moving trees (whole trees). The flamingos were very fun and colorful. The bats made my wife run from the aviary. The poison frogs were beyond adorable. There was a little green one that was about 1/4" long! So tiny! It was so "not busy", it was a blessing. The sand hill cranes were in the parking lot and I got to feed them mullberries from the tree, as they were otherwise waiting for the berries to fall so they could eat them. A wonderful time spent at a great place.

I've occasionally visited Vilas Park Zoo for as long as I can remember. I mean, it is a free family fun day that you can get through in a couple of hours if you need to or you can spend a longer afternoon there. This last visit was just a wonderful short trip. While the kids are older now, they still enjoy it immensely and have a great time. I tend to put a lot of my judgment of places on their food. We were all very happy with the lunch we had and found it to be a great value, especially since our admission was simply a volunteer donation. Being a simple 90 minute drive from home and not in the direction of Chicago, it is a great place for us to visit.

This is a great zoo...it's free to get in and there is a nice variety of animals. There is a carousel and train ride in the Childrens Zoo area (not a real train but still a fun ride); those activites cost $3 per person per ride. There is a walk-through aviary and an area where you can pet and brush the goats. Don't miss the primate building...lemurs and even an orangutan family. There are a few different places to get snacks and drinks, and a sit-down cafe right by the polar bear exhibit. Parking can be tricky...the lot near the zoo is small so you may need to find street parking and walk a little to get to the zoo. Overall a great free activity.
