I'll begin this by saying my review was initially a forced five star review. The salesmen has you review the place to get a membership, before you've even begun to make use of it's services. I'm certain the reviews are largely inflated by this coercive practice. While this is a manipulative and dishonest sales tactic, my true issues go further than this.
I was initially attracted to Anytime fitness from a $1 sale campaign. 1 month for $1, and I thought this meant for your entire membership. I went in to begin a membership under the terms of this sale and after this entire tour and intro song and dance, the salesman finally tells me it's only for the first month that it's $1. Ok, I guess that makes sense, then he tells me it's $24 biweekly afterwards... ok that's a lot worse. $48 a month when I thought I was going to pay $1. But that's fine, it's for my health so it's worth it, and besides, if it's doesn't work out that's fine too. Oh, no it's not.
I realized after signing the contract how serious it was. Yes it is technically the responsibility of the individual to read contracts carefully. But in 2023 where people are frequently hit with 58 page ToS agreements and are familiar with much safer subscription services, forgive me if I was surprised that I needed a lawyer's advice. As a somewhat younger person at the age of 23, this is my first experience with a gym contract, and my second experience with a serious contract ever.
In any case, I'm locked in for 2 years and if I wanted to cancel I would need to pay out $200 for literally nothing. What I would be paying for is the mistake I made in the form of a trap Anytime Fitness very intentionally set up for me and people like me. I went from thinking I'll pay $12 a year to locked in legally for over $500 a year. This may seem naive to many, but that's how naivety works. You have it until someone cons you out of it. What's amazing is that it was at the hands of such a huge and public organization that sells health and self betterment...
One final note, the services are just ok. The Marina facility is smaller than what I might term as comfortable. It's almost always packed full and you will either have to wait for or skip the machines you want. Regardless, It seems like there are much cheaper places as well as places with less predatory or no contracts.
Never use this service. There is no...
Read moreThey deleted my review so I have to re post it. Don’t be fooled. A lot of these “5 star reviews” are because they wave a hefty fee when you sign up if “you leave a good review” any establishment that requires you to leave a good review so you don’t have to pay something.. sketchy. Yeah it’s 24/7, but this gym is gross. Shared bathrooms between males and females and the males always.. and I mean always, leave the seat up with their pee still in the toilet. It’s wild that’s such an issue at this gym. I don’t think anyone is raised to behave like that it’s downright disgusting and feels like I can’t even use the bathroom in a gym I pay for because it’s a constant problem. Probably don’t even wipe either if that’s how they act in public shared spaces. This gym seems to also be ran by teenagers. Barely cleaned. Ceiling in the downstairs area is usually filled with water or something from something leaking upstairs looking like it’s going to cave in at any point. Also, the staff desk is upstairs. That means during hours where the guest doors are unlocked and free for anyone to come in.. people are always coming in to the work out space downstairs not knowing where to go. I have my headphones on, trying to concentrate on my workout. It feels un- safe that anyone can come in and use the vicinity downstairs without any staff by the entrance. Idk about yall, but I like my gyms to be clean, safe, and to be around respectful people. This gym has NONE of that. There are other anytime fitness gyms in Monterey, pacific grove and Carmel and those are a lot better than this one by a miiiillllleeeee. I would like to cancel my membership but we are locked in for the first year. Big mistake on my part. I go to a completely different gym now and just took the L for these payments. Counting down the days I can cancel at...
Read moreThe customer service here is non-existent. Brandon the "manager" keeps sending automated text messages regarding payment. All of these automated messages have questions they are asking me, but when I respond I get no reply back. I have told them repeatedly 4 times the account they keep trying to charge for payment is not active and to use the card on file. However they cannot use their common sense and read the notes that previous staff members have left to use a specific card to charge. The number they have on file goes directly to a third party for billing and other services. BUT does not go directly to the club. When I talked to the billing department they gave me the number on file and I kept telling them every time I dial that number it takes me to the third party. When Brandon called me today to get payment, instead of understanding my frustration he told me I was being disrespectful and hung up on me. One of the worst customer service I have ever had. I have dealt with them for the past month regarding the same issue and they cannot seem to get it right. I don't even want to be a member anymore. This experience is so aggravating. All they care about is money and don't care about why their members are frustrated with how they conduct their business. If you expect to have exceptional customer service and experience with your gym, Anytime Fitness in Marina is not the place. Nothing is more disrespectful and unprofessional than a "manager" hanging up on...
