We really enjoyed this visit! We try to learn about a place / city when we visit, and this was perfect - from the original inhabitants 10,000 years ago, through colonial inhabitants, world wars, and recent race relations. There was a small kids' area for our boys to run off some energy and play. Mardi Gras, yellow fever, local inventors - a lot was covered! And just enough info on each topic that we learned a lot but didn't get overwhelmed or exhausted.
There was a special exhibit on the costumes of "Downton Abbey" when we were there (February 2023), which my husband and I enjoyed a lot!
The Fort Condé reproduction, located across the street, is included with your admission. It took us about half an hour to go through. Note that it also closes half an hour earlier than the museum.
We arrived at 2 and left as the museum closed at 5, but we are very thorough...
Read moreWe live in a completely different region of the United States but we wanted to see the information on display pertaining to the Civil War/ War Between States. We thought the museum represented the war very well with representation from both sides. We also recognized several other influential people in America who we had not recalled were from Alabama. We appreciated Mobile history, despite not being local. As visitors to this region, we became very conscious of the resilience of human nature and especially people from the south by viewing the timeline of Mobile. It was an amazing display depicting the numerous fires, diseases and hurricanes which affected the area.
There was also a large display about Mardi gras although we didn't go through it.
This museum had excellent , modern displays with very friendly and...
Read moreThe exhibits were nice. They focused on local Mobile history and were well done.
The setup for the museum as a whole was a bit lacking. Exhibits were located in various rooms or halls as ecpected. However, there were private events sprinkled in between exhibit rooms with no clear way to navigate around the private events.
We started our museum tour/visit on the upper floor. The stairs to the upper floor terminate in a hallway with doors marked Staff Only (or something similar). We followed the hallway to the left leading to a dead end. We backtracked and followed the hallway to the right. This led us to a private event. We could see exhibits on the other side of a room hosting what appeared to be a wedding rehearsal. We crashed the rehearsal (?) to reach...
