A year ago my best friend and I were turned away service at Ruth Chris because her jeans had holes in them. We were very upset and had planned our trip to Mobile around that particular visit. I had been through gruelling finals and my friend who’s an EMT had been beat down all year. I am a huge fan of Latin food and decided we would grab something in Mobile rather than drive all the way back to Pensacola. That friends, was a moment in time I’m so thankful for now. We happened upon Rooster’s. The place had charm just oozing out of every corner. Its location in downtown Mobile was nothing short of incredible. Rooster’s has become a monthly tradition in our friendship. Roosters has gotten us through rough weeks at school, break ups, and everything in between! We were immediately greeted by a server who wore a smile on their face the entirety of our visit. I had been on a bad streak with margaritas in my home town and literally every single one was purely awful. My margaritas at Rooster’s? Like ambrosia! They are the margaritas that every subsequent margarita is judged by (and no one comes close). The open kitchen allows you a peek inside the production of the delectable dishes whipped up by the Rooster’s team. Everything is fresh and hot and even the kitchen team is constantly smiling. If I died tomorrow I would hope that I got one more chance to dine here. That’s how passionately I feel about this place. It deserves 6 stars! When you stop in just relax and order 1 of everything! There’s not one bad thing...
Read moreMy partner and I went to Roosters for her birthday, and right away knew we'd like the place as there is a piano staring at you when you walk in the door. The ambiance is sort of youthful hip, but we didn't feel like we were babysitting, which can happen at some places where the crowd tends be in the "three decades or less on the planet" group.
I ordered a beer and water, she just water, and then only wanted to share a plate of loaded nachos, so that's what we did. They do come with lotsa good junk on 'em and you can add meat for a nominal charge - so we added barbacoa, which is Spanish for BBQ, and also order some guacamole on the side.
The nachos (the chips) were pretty standard fare, but the Pico de Gallo was very fresh, the pickled jalapenos very zesty(which we like!), the Chipotle Cream a nice touch, and the jack cheese was good as well. But, no doubt, the Queso Blanco was off-the-chain good. Although the meat was very tender, I was not a fan of the barbacoa because of what it was tossed with - it was definitely not a version of sauce with which either of us was familiar. The guac seemed fresh, but was overpowered by too much lime. Lime is necessary in any good guacamole recipe, but it should be a hint, not mask the avocado itself.
Overall, we really liked Roosters and will definitely return to try some of their other offerings as fresh is always good.
So, cockadoodledoo yourself a favor and strut your bad self over to Roosters for some delicious LA fare - it's...
Read moreI love a chef who takes the time to make the food taste really good. I ordered the Pura Vida Burrito (essentially, the veggie burrito) with Queso topping. Because the orders with Gulf or Cajun shrimp looked good, I considered ordering the Gulf Shrimp Taco, but asked if I could have a side of shrimp instead. They obliged and that made my burrito even better.
Many, many veggie burritos I've had simply sautee' the vegetables and wrap them up. Some are too greasy - most are bland. (I guess they think vegetarians will be happy with their vegetables no matter how they're served.) But THIS burrito at Roosters was full of taste in every bite.
It was spicy, but not just to be hot. It had FLAVORFUL spices, not hot spices. And the vegetables were cooked perfectly and sliced to just the right size. (Many burritos are filled with large chunks of whatever and you're forced to have a single, giant bite of broccoli.)
Don't let the casual decor fool you. This food is better than most any (maybe all?) stylish, "finer" dining Mexican-styled restaurants on both sides of Mobile Bay. My server, Katie, was nice enough and informative enough for me to remember her name. And... they bring the check out in a real book. (I got Pinocchio.) It's silly, but it's different and I liked it. (By the way, the shrimp was...
