History researcher here, found their information to me largely correct as presented. Even in the secondary exhibits most information was iron clad. The secondary exhibit “150 Years of Clay County” did have a lack of contemporary third party sources however. The Hudson Bay Company sources cited seem to have been mostly pro-Euroamerican in bias. Perhaps the accounts of French fur traders would have clarified a more nuanced view of the conflicts leading to European Settlement of Clay county? That is the single flaw of note I found, an impressive feat for a traveling exhibit. I will admit that the exhibit may have given such citations, but if so, they were not readily apparent. Either way, not a serious error. I am unfamiliar with the history surrounding their other secondary exhibit “The Needle’s Art” so am unable to provide constructive and accurate commentary on...
Read moreThe Hjemkomst Center is such a wonderful community resource and celebrates the arts and culture of our region. The grounds around the Center are nice too as the river nearby. I really love the Stave church outside of the museum it's such a part of my Norwegian heritage and a very unique style of a church building. This building also houses the historical society which holds regular rotating exhibits and there is a Senior Center. Last week I went to a meeting and ate at the Senior Center for lunch. They do a very nice lunch with coffee and cookies too. The building resembles a sea faring ship and it's easy to find. Parking is free. Last summer I saw the FMCT play 9 to 5 here excellent production. I also really appreciate the gift shop which features many ethnic things and local artists and craftsman . I feel this is a must stop place to really...
Read moreHighly recommend stopping here for a quiet little look around. It's neat to read about the story behind the Hjemkomst and take in the massive scale of it (stand beside the oar and you'll know what I mean). There's a nice mix of video, visual, and textural components in this exhibit. You can feel some of the items that were used in the ships creation. There are stairs you can go up to get an aerial view of the ship's deck, but unfortunately no wheelchair access to that portion of it that I could see.
The stave church tour was fairly detailed as well and it was neat to check out the inside of it. There's soooo much detail in the carvings and even in the shingles which took four cuts a piece! There were also two other exhibits downstairs that were included with admission. All in all a decent place to spend an...
