Anyone contemplating an iPhone repair at a Batteries Plus Bulbs would be wise to reconsider due to their inferior/defective “unbranded” replacement parts! My young, inexperienced daughter brought her iPhone X to Batteries Plus Bulbs (#233) in Mount Pleasant to replace an original battery that had swelled and was starting to separate her iPhone OLED screen from its frame. Colton Cantrell convinced my daughter to also replace this screen even though there was no apparent issue or damage to it. Fast forward several months, the lower section of the replacement screen is now disappearing in both corners and the screen component is separating apart from itself (not from the frame) causing the touch screen to malfunction unless pressed together (see photo). I brought the phone back to Batteries Plus Bulbs and spoke directly with Colton who confirmed the replacement screen was clearly defective, but would not replace or honor the warranty because of a single fine hairline crack at the top of the screen (see area circled on photo). Colton admitted that the hairline crack was not causal to the defective replacement screen and only suggested I should pay hundreds of dollars more to replace it with another of their identical inferior screens! I’m writing this to simply warn others needing phone repairs that there are many other competent companies in the Charleston area that not only back their warranties, but use original or higher quality replacement components that will provide you years of reliability – YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! FYI – the replacement screen is a lower resolution LCD (not an OLED screen) with a substandard glass surface that will crack easily. The replacement “unbranded” battery gets a lot warmer in your hand than the original did, however it is still currently working.
RESPONSE TO OWNER COMMENTS BELOW: I’m glad as the owner you choose to respond, however you were unfortunately misinformed by your employees. After reading your reply, your employees veracity for truthfulness and how you conduct business comes into question and further raises my concern of any legitimate need to replace my daughters original OLED screen that was fully functional and undamaged when given to you for a simple battery replacement. For the record the “new damage” you refer to in your response was a MAJOR DEFECT in the replacement screen that was starting to separate from itself - glass top section from the screen component. When I entered your store, the first employee I encountered looked at the phone and immediately confirmed it was defective and explained why. That was when Colton Cantrell, hearing that came out from his office with a concerned/panicked look, took the phone, placed it on the counter and with his face mere inches from the phone, declared that since this phone had a small hairline crack at the top of the screen, there is no warranty coverage! He further stated that I should look at the warranty paperwork and if it has a crack in the screen it’s not covered - which the warranty does not state that! I sarcastically asked If the hairline crack (which looks like a scratch) at the top of the phone could have contributed in any way to the defective screen bottom that was separating from itself – he acknowledged no, but again stated because of the crack he could not replace under warranty and suggested I purchase another replacement screen. Unlike what you were told, I was not offered any discount. Furthermore, at no time did either of your employees mention or ask when this phone was originally repaired and had no idea it was outside of your stated 6 month warranty period – ironically your warranty coverage is a reasonable expectation of what one can expect for your screen replacement longevity. Also, your warranty states that your replacement parts may be REFURBISHED, which I now understand is probably why this screen component is so oddly falling apart and failing. If you doubt my word, please pull you security video with audio and post it here...
Read moreWe bought one of our boys a battery-powered Razor "dirt bike" for Christmas and, on the second day of riding, realized the stock batteries were complete duds! I called Batteries Plus Bulbs and asked if they had replacements. They did, so I removed the batteries and brought them into the store. Colton greeted me and mentioned his familiarity with this issue (apparently, it's fairly commonplace within the Razor line). He guided me to the section of the store with the replacements, explained the pricing tiers and the corresponding, expected ability for each model to hold a charge, and I bought the most expensive one (son's Christmas present, so what can ya do???). It's notable that Colton never steered me toward the top-tier; instead, he allowed me to make the decision. I thought this was admirable because the stereotypical salesperson would've pointed me to the most costly.
Here's where Colton wildly exceeded my expectations: I got home, further disassembled the bike, and then realized the wires needed to be soldered, and of course I don't have a soldering iron. I called the store back and Colton immediately - without my suggesting - offered to solder it if I brought the batteries back in. I hopped in the car, brought them back, and he took great care to solder them perfectly! Seriously....WAY better than the bike arrived out of the box (of course...thank you, "Made in China"). When I got home I assembled the bike which has been running issue-free for three weeks!
It's rare to encounter workers these days who seem to give two shlts about their job; rarer still to interact with an employee who understands your plight and actually GAF about helping to resolve the issue. Colton was a first class ambassador for the Batteries Plus Bulbs franchise that day because he knew how to remedy the situation, and genuinely wanted to bring joy to a kid whose Christmas gift was on the fritz. Thank you, Colton - impressive work ethic and generosity...
Read moreCame in looking for a key fob battery. I couldn’t get the back off my key fob so I asked the employee to assist me or show me how it comes off. At first he said Yes. Then he said he actually could not do it with me present because it was a liability. So I asked the employee if he could do it if I turned around and didn’t look. At first he said yes then he tells me it’s actually going to cost me $13.99 TO HELP ME TAKE THE BACK OFF MY KEY FOB SO I CAN SEE THE BATTERY TYPE, get it from the shelf and do it myself. Then I ask him to just show me the battery I need and I will look it up on YouTube and do it myself… I will not be coming back. I go out of my way to support local businesses and I will not be returning here. I could have saved myself the gas and frustration and ordered this from Amazon or Walmart and had it delivered to my house. $13.99 to remove the back of my key fob?? Was the $13.99 worth losing a customer ?
Update- The fob was not opened by your employee, the battery was not replaced by your employee, and the fob was not properly closed by your employee because the employee did nothing more than sell me a battery I should have purchased from another store. Maybe check with your employee or call the frustrated customer next time?
The only thing saving this for me is my phone call to Colton, who is apparently the manager, who explained this as typical corporate rules. I get it now…corporate...
