I wrote a review about the New Braunfels Food Bank a couple years ago because I wanted people to know how nice they were and how they were eager to help you. Well I went back there about a month ago and boy how things have changed. When you have someone at the front desk that person is the first impression for the entire place. How you are treated reflects on the place as a whole. If you have someone working the front desk that is not welcoming and puts off to be stand-offish that only makes clients uncomfortable and trust me we are already uncomfortable going there to begin with cause the bottom line is nobody wants to be asking for a hand out to begin with. Not all clients that come through there have the same situation and not all that come through there have the knowledge or understanding of the process to even get benefits. There are many first timers, young mothers, people with mental/ intellectual disabilities and foreigners that may not speak English. Would you treat a veteran with PTSD who served our country ugly or disrespectful? I sure hope not. Whatever the situation may be everyone should be treated with dignity and guided through the process to get the assistance they need. We don't come in there to be judged, made to feel uncomfortable or talked down to. In this world we all live in today we don't know from one day to the next what our futures bring whether it be lay-offs, unexpected illnesses, divorce, or death of the family's breadwinner. Asking for help is a hard thing to swallow when you're the person asking. I personally would give the shirt off my back if I saw someone in need with no questions asked. I wish I was made of money so I could help the people I see everyday struggling because it's a sad thing to see. Besides it's not like you can take your money with you when you go to the happy hunting gtound. All I ask is for you to put yourself in their shoes and treat people how you would expect to be treated even if it's the same old song and dance day in and day out. Kindness and Empathy go a long way but first impressions tend to...
ย ย ย Read moreI love my experience with the food bank. I went to the food bank when I had just moved into my apartment in New Braunfels and had no money for food due to the expenses I had made to move into the apartment. the food bank was there to help me in open arms.
However , I did have a negative experience yesterday with one of the receptionist. I made a call regarding an appointment I had made for the weekend, I knew I had an appointment but I didn't know what time. To give context , I'm a night shift worker , therefore certain times I'm not awake during the day. I knew I had made a previous statement to the appointment lady about this. So she helped me choose a later date to accommodate me coming in. When the time came , I had called the food bank. The call was picked up but then was hung up so I left a voice mail about knowing what time my appointment was. I had gotten a call back and the lady had a very rude attitude explaining how I didn't have an appointment. I was upset about this since I knew I had an appointment for this weekend and I explained to her the situation and who the lady was that did the appointment for me. She rudely explained that I had to either get re-certified and to come in on Friday or Saturday.
For a second, I really did think I didn't have a appointment but the next day I had gotten a message saying my appointment was coming up and the time.
Therefore to anyone making an appointment, PLEASE TAKE A PICTURE OF THE CARD THEY GIVE YOU.
It was more of the attitude of the lady than anything regarding this situation. Makes you want to go less to not...
ย ย ย Read moreMy husband and I spent a morning volunteering at the NB Food Bank and the experience was incredible. The process to register for volunteering, the sign in, and the brief orientation are all well-organized, efficient, and easy to use. Even so, the staff on hand was kind, knowledgeable, and more than willing to offer help at any stage. We received a tour of the facility that included a much appreciated history of the program. During the tour we were shown several different areas that were in need of volunteer work. Each station was thoroughly explained and once the tour ended, we got straight to work stocking shelves, cleaning, and organizing inventory. Even though the staff was very busy, they took care to check in with us several times throughout the day and were readily available to answer any questions and provide guidance. I highly recommend volunteering at NB Food Bank, the staff is incredible, particularly the coordinator Jennifer Lankford, who went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and appreciated. Prior to volunteering here, I was unaware of what a thorough and holistic approach the NB Food Bank takes towards fighting hunger and food insecurity. While the program does focus on providing food to those in need, many other services are available onsite as well including assistance with finding a job and nutrition classes. The organization provides services that are direly needed in the community and relies heavily on volunteers. If you are looking for a way to help, I strongly urge you to consider spending a morning at the NB Food Bank, even children...
