I know most folks review restaurants and not usually a museum but I review them all! My husband and I are in town from Houston. Unfortunately, we are staying in Covington which must be the armpit of Louisiana. I thought that title went to Houma once upon a time but I’ve since revised my opinion. So I first dragged my family here when I was a mere 15-year old. My chubby, younger, pimply self subjected the fam to an hour of history that they probably preferred to forget. That was 31 years ago so I felt like it was high time to revisit this wonderful museum in this new millennium. Nothing has really changed much here and thank god for that! There seem to be more exhibits than I recall but, overall, it’s much the same as 1989. My husband actually enjoyed himself, the docents were very knowledgeable, we even bought some souvenirs (which I rarely do). I wanted to ask the young man behind the counter how do you present the subject in this modern era of ‘wokeness’ and cancel culture? No doubt, some will see this place as a monument to Southern aggression and slavery and so on. I never saw anything specifically glorifying slavery itself but these are touchy topics and I am curious on how the museum relates that to our modern sensibilities. Anyway, we enjoyed the visit and I sincerely recommend this museum to anyone wanting to get off the beaten path. It certainly tops that Museum of...
Read moreThe artifacts are very beautifully displayed and clearly very well taken care of. You can tell that the folks who run the museum truly care about the history and preserving what they can while sharing it with the public. The multitude of artifacts that range from flags to journals and everything in between is absolutely astonishing. No matter the size of the piece, each piece is definitely given the same amount of love and attention. Seeing a cradle that President Davis and his wife rocked their children in truly gave us goosebumps. If you are ever in the New Orleans area we highly recommend that you stop by. It is literally right across the street from the WWII museum. Even the building itself is rich in history, and listening to the creaks in the floor as you walk through is something you don’t see very much these day. A huge thank you to the staff for your kindness and answering our questions. We will be back the next time we...
Read moreIf I could give this museum zero stars I would. I as well as my mother have service dogs that helps us with every day tasks. We were down here on vacation and every place we had visited had been wonderful and very welcoming of our service dogs. When we entered into the museum we were stopped by a very rude lady. She demanded that we show her documentation of the dogs and that we were going to upset other people in the museum. Even though there was no one in there. When I informed her that it was against ADA law to ask for documentation she yelled across the museum “then what can I ask”. I then told her that she could ask what service the dog provides and is it a service dog. Our dogs were in vests that clearly stated they were service dogs. She then proceeded to kick us out of the museum. This was a horrible experience and very unneeded we will never...
