My husband and I attended tours for both the Gallier House and the Hermann-Grima House. For the month of October the Gallier House had a special focus on Creole Mourning rituals and etiquette during the 1700-1800s. It was incredibly interesting, and the docents/tour guides were extremely knowledgeable about both the house and subject matter. They were even able to answer questions about topics tangential to the tour focus so they truly knew the subject (s) in depth not just had a set of tour talking points memorized. We would highly recommend this tour.
We also toured the Hermann-Grima House, which is a part of the same organization, and they had just started a new tour about Urban Enslavement. Very thought provoking. Our guide went in depth about the differences of the day to day lives that enslaved people in urban households lived versus that of enslaved people on a rural farm or plantation might have experienced. I definitely learned a few new things, and, once again, the tour guide was deeply knowledgeable about the subject. We would recommend this tour to anyone looking to get to know the "real" history of New Orleans beyond the pretty architecture but the true day to day minutiae of the time period that built the...
Read moreI highly recommend adding Gallier House and Hermann-Grima House while in the French Quarters. Lots of good information provided by the docents (Judith and Leah, respectively). Very interesting to see and imagine how New Orleans was 150 to 200 years ago. Docents did a great job of explaining and painting a picture of how life was centuries ago.
We did the tour of three houses in New Orleans (Hermann-Grima, BK, and Gallier. These are all very good tours and recommend doing all three because they are all quite different from each other. In all cases, the tour guides were very personable, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. Hermann-Grima had an enhanced focus on urban slavery, while the emphasis in the Gallier house was more on architecture and how life was like for the Galliers. The BK house had more storytelling particularly that of Keyes and Beauregard, and less about the house and the...
Read moreThis tour was a highlight of my trip! I came because I was interested in shooting locations from AMC’s Interview with the Vampire and in local history and architecture. The tour was detailed and fascinating, and my tour guide was clearly extremely knowledgeable—I felt open to ask many questions and got great answers in return!
Gallier being an architect and designing his house to be on the cutting edge for the time and testing out his own inventions to manage the climate (such as various ventilation systems) made for a unique historical and architectural experience. The set up of the tour and the way you’re brought through how the family lived day to day also made for a cool experience—I felt like I could really visualize what their lives were like in a way that you just can’t at a traditional museum.
Fantastic tour and great value!...
