Wow, these neighbors really hate this place.
I'm a "remotely normal person" who has lived here for 12 months and I'm pretty happy with it. They've got rules on rules which makes it feel a bit like an adult dorm, but that is balanced by a pretty high standard for maintenance and cleanliness.
The building maintenance folks and door staff are all chill and highly competent; repairs get made quickly and they make the place feel like home. The company that manages the pool and gym is a little more questionable, but even they only recently started slipping with the cleaning and maintenance (I'll wait for the fall/winter for an update with how that goes).
Folks who are complaining about partying are right in the sense that this building attracts folks who like to party, but all my immidate neighbors are very reasonable people and I've never had issue with anyone. I've actually become pretty good friends with different neighbors throughout the building...this is by far the most social building I've ever lived in.
A number of people are complaining about the balcony with too many parties, I live above that balcony and it's fine. They are limited to the weekends and always over by midnight. One night I went down there to join the party and it was a pretty good time.
Of course you can get stuck with a terrible neighbor in any apartment building, but that really isn't managements fault and in NY you can't evict a person for blasting music and being rude.
I can also see on here a trend of women who have issues with not feeling safe in the building and obviously that is really not right. As a man I can't speak to that directly, though I am not surprised to hear there are some terrible dudes in the building.
I will say that when my friends who are female are coming and going at night I do feel pretty good about their safety...the rotary in front is away from the street, well lit, has tons of cameras, and is usually pretty active at all hours of the night and early mornings. I think this architecture is a lot safer than many NYC buildings with just a door on the street.
Lastly, to the people who are complaining about the smell of weed... how are you surprised that 420 Kent in Brooklyn...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhere do I even start? My feelings about this place are so conflicting. On the one hand, I spent two years here, with an amazing view, in what is truly a beautifully built building thanks to the developers at Spitzer Enterprises and the Architects at ODA. Where they messed up was handing this off to First Service Residential to manage the building. Everything everyone says about the management or lack thereof is 100% true. From day 1, my apartment smelled like cigarette smoke as if someone was smoking right outside my door. The building manager and maintenance staff told me I was the only one making a complaint, however I quickly learned that many tenants had come together to try to force the building to take some type of action around this issue, including formal complaints to 311, which never resulted in anything. One year and no less than 30 written complaints later, management had still done nothing, and I was forced to take it upon myself to seal all the vents in the apartment and purchase a very expensive air purifier so I could start sleeping with the windows closed in the winter. The only one who tried to help me was the doorman, who was unfortunately let go due to his ongoing issues with management. It was very clear that they hated how he acknowledged that the building had issues, rather than trying to ignore them. When my lease agreement came up for renewal, the increase was more than I felt was warranted, however the leasing office basically laughed at my counter offer. When I told them I'd no longer be renewing, they tried to convince me to re-sign by offering the unit to me at an amount that was even less than the amount I had countered, but at that point it was too late, so I'll be moving out. The people who work here who are not management (front desk, amenities staff, package room) are really the best, and it really is such a beautiful place, so it's a true shame that first service is doing...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe management staff told so many lies. I arrived at the office , was given a tour by 2 different staff members on two different dates, quoted different prices for the same apartments a difference of 3thousand. While the view is beautiful, the apartments are extremely small, the master bedroom is not a true master bedroom, there's a fee to use the gym. The prices were also increased throughout the building. A 2 bedroom 2bathroom on the 7th floor was 7,850, the 9th floor 9,500 and higher these prices are INSANE. They were given 421a tax abatement, mixed used building, all the prices are supposed to be the same price, no matter the floor, no matter if you have an outdoor space or not. IT IS A COMPLETE SCAM , THEY WANT TO CHARGE YOU HIGH PRICES BECAUSE ITS BY THE WATER. Meanwhile the neighborhood is horrible, the subway at Marcy ave looks the same way from the 70's its run down, dopefiends are hanging out at the subway, all on the steps, it's like 2 different worlds. The bus route is a disaster.
I filed a complaint to have them investigated. When I spoke to the staff at the government agencies about 420 Kent they were appalled. The young lady who took me on the first tour said we only have 2 apartments available, when she understood that I didnt like the first apartment, all of a sudden she said oh we have a few more available on another floor that's not released or completed. The building looks like a ghost town, some of the apartments have exposed wiring, clothes scattered around as if the workers are sleeping there it's horrible. THE REAL PRICE OF THOSE APARTMENTS ARE AS LISTED 1 BEDROOM 2,650, A 2BEDROOM 2,950- 3,350. I WAS TOLD THIS BY ANOTHER AGENT ONCE I TOLD HER AN INVESTIGATION WAS HAPPENING BEHIND THE SCENES AND SHOWED HER DOCUMENTATION THANK GODNESS I TAPED THE...
