My service dog and I have been loyal BVC clients since July of 2017. Task trained service dogs are medical equipment and require very high quality, consistent care at all times so they’ll be able to assist with their handler’s medical conditions and/or disabilities 24/7/365. While Hughie’s service dog school provided me with an excellent foundation and ongoing support with his training and care, BVC has been a vital partner in ensuring Hughie remains at peak health. Whether it’s a routine physical exam, management of Hughie’s extremely severe allergies, or a rare illness, BVC has always provided care well above the veterinary standard. They offer a clean office and safe environment with state of the art medical equipment and services. It is helpful and convenient that they have two locations and are able to handle both routine care and most emergencies under one roof. The doctors, techs, and staff all get ongoing continuing education on a regular basis. Many of the same people have worked at BVC for many years — having staff, doctors, and techs who are happy and well educated goes a long way to keeping a consistently high level of care. Mostly everyone who works at BVC is familiar with us being that it’s been mostly the same people working there for years, and that helps everyone know how to best serve my precious boy and I each time we visit.
BVC is also not pushy to sell services and products like so many veterinary clinics today. We had our first BVC visit just 5 days after I brought Hughie home from his service dog school in 2017. During the exam, Dr. Katz realized that Hughie’s bottom eyelids were flipped in (aka entropion), which is not normal for a 2.5 year old dog (and oddly got missed at the service dog school despite doctors constantly checking the dogs being trained). If we didn’t surgically correct it, Dr. Katz explained that Hughie would go blind from his eyelashes scratching at his corneas. Being that this was my first dog ever, he was brand new in my life as a service dog, and the sheer shock of being told my boy needed surgery 5 days after coming home with me, Dr. Katz encouraged me to get a second opinion if I wanted before proceeding with surgery where most other practices would have pushed me to schedule surgery ASAP. That told me that Dr. Katz was more concerned with me feeling confident and comfortable in my decision than him making money on a procedure. I never felt the need to go ahead and get that second opinion because it was clear as day once he pointed out the issue. Ultimately, Dr. Katz saved my brand new service dog from going blind and getting retired early by noticing a detail that other doctors clearly missed. All of the BVC doctors are the same way. They don’t push me to buy medication from their own pharmacy in cases where I am able to get a specific medication for less — in fact, they happily encourage me to save the money. All of the doctors always present every treatment option, whether it’s something routine or more serious, and they encourage trying the least expensive options wherever possible. Vet care is going to be expensive everywhere, but BVC’s prices are much lower than the average costs at other clinics — and they still try to save clients money. They are a business of course, but they care more about allowing people to make the best decisions possible for the lowest cost as possible because they are patient-centered rather than aiming to make people pay for unnecessary treatments.
These are just some highlights about our experience with BVC. I could say much more, but I’ll end with this: I used to live in The Bronx, but in recent years, I’ve traveled from Queens to The Bronx to bring Hughie to BVC. They are compassionate, they have a high standard of care, and I always trust the medical advice and treatment my boy gets. When people are willing to travel to BVC from far away when they could be going to vets in their own area, that should tell you BVC’s practice is worthwhile. I highly recommend both BVC offices. You will be satisfied and your pet will be...
Read moreMy experience at Bronx veterinary was a nightmare, I took my teacup yorkie to the office At Eastchester Rd because I had notice my furbaby had blurry eyes while there I requested a complete blood work because I had noticed my baby was drinking a lot of water and urinating more than usual. I got a return call the following day and was told that there had been some abnormality on his blood work to return because the Dr. needed to speak to me. I was advised to return to Webster Webster Center . Where I met with Dr Robert’s . Dr Robert’s informed me that my Chewie blood work showed he had pancreatitis and kidney , he informed me that the kidney were early stages so he would have to be admitted for 3 days and would be given iv and medication to treat the pancreas he said it was some new medication and that he was hopefully my chewy would feel better after treatment, not to worry about kidney because it was early stage.. it was 7/3 the following day the office would be closed he assured me that my baby would be well taken care of that they will be someone at the hospital . he also said that they woild keep in contact with me, sending me pictures and someone be calling me updating me on his conditions. On July 4 I called for an update and wasn’t call back to late in the evening with a picture stating that my Chewy was doing well and adjusting to the medication and that the next day the dr would call me for updates that was 7/5. No call .. No text .. no update .. I was worried I called no answer I text to reply.. no answer or text Saturday morning I called and front desk told me someone would call me I was coming to visit my Chewie she checked and said they will Call me I did receive a call back from a technician who advise me to come in right away dr had some news … I arrived and dr Robert’s was very A blunt didn’t even look at my face just said medication didn’t work you can take Chewie home feed him anything you want !! When I returned Mon dr Richard’s told me his kidneys were at end stage how if a few days ago you said not to worry? Now you saying don’t worry about the pancreas . He said he should eat a prescription food for his kidneys mind you my dog was worst off then when I took him there .. totally dehydrated not once did dr Robert’s look at my Chewie I requested a written prescription and was told I have to pay $7.00 for the prescription. Their out for money dr Robert’s knew my Chewie had end stage kidney he should have been honest and not given me hope or admitted him for those days were my dog got worst and now I have a bill for 4000.00. Dr Robert’s is a monster that place is disgusting people all over the place no privacy. I will definitely be filing a complaint against that hospital, especially against Dr. Roberts. Two days later my Chewie passed away … I believe his stay there did my Chewie in and the lies that I was told by DR Robert’s .. read some of the other complaints against that horrible place ..I have copies of the report and plan on filing a complaint with the American Medical Association. They also were trying to bill me for services that weren’t done . I discussed this with the billing department and they had to refund $199.00 look over your statement carefully their...
Read moreI had an incredibly frustrating experience at Bronx Veterinary Center, particularly with one provider whose condescending and dismissive attitude made an urgent situation with my cat even more difficult.
I brought my CKD cat in when he stopped eating due to constipation and he had also started dragging his back paw, the vet immediately dismissed my concerns, stating he didn’t feel any backed-up stool. When I insisted, he asked me to show him where. Rather than listening, he argued that I was confusing constipation with not defecating due to not eating even though I explained he had stopped defecating long before refusing to eat. It felt like I had to “prove” my cat’s symptoms instead of having them taken seriously. Then, out of nowhere, he stated he believed my cat had a tumor. This was shocking, as my cat had previously been active, eating well, and a visit three months before showed improved CKD #'s. I tried explaining that his decline started after taking iron medication prescribed by another doctor, but the vet ignored me, literally stating, “I’m the expert.”
Lab work and X-rays later confirmed my cat was severely constipated, with no signs of a tumor. Given his state, he likely needed hospitalization and IV fluids, but how could the vet properly treat him when he refused to listen? My cat passed away the following day.
Unfortunately, I understand why so many reviews describe this practice as a cash grab. They overbook appointments, rush exam visits, and fail to provide detailed guidance on managing chronic conditions. Aside from switching my cat to a renal diet, no additional support was offered. Despite his dehydration, I was never advised about subcutaneous fluids. When I called later to ask about it, they never responded.
Urgent care is another issue. They charge additional fees instead of properly triaging pets based on medical urgency. Their in-house pharmacy was equally frustrating. My cat disliked the renal food I had ordered, so I called to see if they sold individual cans to test different flavors. They never got back to me. When I found out Petco could fill a vet-approved prescription with single cans, Bronx Veterinary Center refused to call it in unless I paid $8 and picked up the script in person—despite explaining I would continue ordering the cases through their online pharmacy.
Rather than making pet care easier, this practice creates unnecessary obstacles. Their lack of support, poor communication, and profit-driven policies only add to the stress of managing a sick pet. If you have other options, I strongly recommend...
