This and its sister colonnade down by Grant's Tomb were constructed as part of the Riverside Drive Improvement project, a mere hundred or so years ago. You can still read the concrete dedication tablets, on the fence wall of the walkway on either end of the colonnade, to its north and south, where the walkway is about to widen. (They're not real obvious -- took me years before I noticed them). The observation area was an amenity for those nice days when you took your Model T "upstate" for a drive in the country. The northbound HH Parkway was originally Riverside Drive north of the GWB to the Dyckman St exit. (Those are some fab pix, James Presser! You are braver than I.
