First off Angel, our tour guide was down to earth and worked hard to make sure everyone had a great time. She was also very prepared with history regarding places of interest we past as well as some intriguing information on the history of the restaurants we visited. She gets 5 stars! During the tour we visited 6 locations. The first was Nitro Bar. A coffee house utilising nitrogen infused coffee. They also gave us a sour dough toast with pesto spread, locally made mozzarella cheese, sliced tomato and a balsamic glaze. Kudos to Nitro Bar. Next we went to Leo’s market for mini carnitas taco. Also very tasty. Then we walked over to New England chowder Co. We enjoyed a seafood chowder made with bay scallops, shrimp and cod. It was probably the best chowder I ever tasted. Then off to Stoneacre Garden for some fried fresh calamari. A difficult choice to serve 17 people in our group. It was quite good as the calamari was very tender. Then to Mother’s Pizza for a Margarita Pizza and a cocktail. Also pizza was very well prepared and the cocktail was excellent. It was a Aperol spritz with rosemary. Very refreshing! Then we finished our tour at Yagi noodle bar. Basil the chef was nominated for a James Beard award in 2024. He makes all of his noodles fresh in house. You can definitely taste the difference. He also served us a saki negroni by Moonstone. It was a coconut and lemongrass infused saki. As a rule I don’t enjoy traditional saki. This one was served ice cold and really pared well with the spicy noodles we were offered. In summation, the tour gets 5 stars from myself and my wife. There wasn’t one bad tasting among the 6 offered. This was our 5th food tour and our second in Newport. We’d be willing and eager...
Read moreErin was our tour guide for this food tour. She was very personable and funny. The tour was okay.
She had mentioned that the tour doesn't go into tourist areas, yet we went to three places in the tourist areas. The Seafood chowder place, the Ramen place, and the Pizza place.
The chowder place was not good in my opinion. I don't like seafood chowder (I would've been completely happy with Clam Chowder) so instead those who didn't want seafood chowder got corn chowder. I wouldn't call it a chowder at all. It was soupy, not thick and the flavor was heavy of dill. My husband had the seafood chowder, and he said it was also a very heavy flavor of dill. Also because it is in a heavy tourist location, there was no seating, so we sat on the wall across the street. Not the tour operators fault about the chowder itself, I just wish they had chosen something out of the heavy tourist area.
Something we found odd is having ice cream in the middle of the food tour. I understand it may be a routing logistic, but from a food consumption standpoint, it just doesn't make sense - most others we talked to in our tour group agreed that dessert (if part of the tour) should be at the end.
I liked that she provided everyone a sheet of paper that had the restaurant names on it for a reminder of where you had been.
Only other thing I would mention is not to talk about tipping. It's fine she had her venmo information on the sheet of paper as that is very helpful for those who may not have brought cash - but she mentioned tips a few times during the tour which just seemed a...
Read moreIn looking for something different to do on a cloudy Sunday in June, our group of 4 booked the Newport neighborhood version of Rhode Island Red Food Tours. Our guide was Elise who was instrumental in making our afternoon fun, unique and informative . Elise loves Newport and it shows.
We've been to Newport often but always to the touristy "downtown". Today we were introduced to the "real" Newport downtown and along the way enjoyed some awesome small plates in unique local settings. It was unanimous among our group of 4 that the nitro coffee and delicious Caprese toast from Nitro Bar was our favorite . We did enjoy each of the 6 unique small businesses that we visited. Even though the offerings are "small bites", it might be nice to have a small plate to rest your food; not all offered this.
We were a small group as opposed to the typical tour size of 14 and we felt honored to have what seemed like a private tour . Elise kept the flow moving with fun facts, historical trivia and the infusion of her love for Newport.
Since we toured on a Sunday, the restaurant lineup is different than the other for days. I'd love to return for another tour to try two of the establishments other reviewers have noted as awesome : Perro Salado and Yagi Noodles.
This food tour is a great way to see unique, less traveled parts of Newport while enjoying some yummy small plates and learning some jeopardy worthy facts...
