I am a huge fan of the Gwinnett Library System and utilize branches all over town. Today was my second experience at the Norcross branch and it pains me to say the dishonesty of the library staff overshadowed what should have been a wonderful experience. The librarians took it upon themselves to lock our cards for the day without a common courtesy discussion about why they wanted to take that step and what they thought we did to warrant that action. I did not even realize my card had been locked until I tried to use it. When I discovered the issue, I asked the librarian about the lock. When I didn't get an answer that made sense, I asked to speak to the supervisor on duty as we've never had this issue at any other branch. When I started asking questions, I was told the system blocked our cards. When I pointed out that the system didn't have the information to block the cards based on what I was being told, I stated that the only way that could have happened was if one of the librarians on site manually blocked it in the system. I was told that was not the case because she (the person to whom I was speaking) was the only person with the authority to do that. Not wanting to make a scene, I just said ok and walked away from the supervisor. I then followed up with a call to the customer service number at the library headquarters and described the situation. This individual confirmed my original statement that the computer would not have had that information to block our cards and that it had to be done by a librarian on sight. That is where I take issue. First and foremost, if the librarians thought we did something wrong, all they had to do was come over, ask questions, and then make their point. That did not occur. Second, when I pointed out that our cards being locked could not have happened the way I was being told it happened, the librarian did not back down and continued the lie. That is not acceptable and in my opinion, boils down to an abuse of "power" on the part of the librarians involved. It sends the message that the librarians determine who can and cannot utilize services in the library based on whatever stories they want to spin. I understand everyone makes mistakes, however, if you make a mistake, apologize and correct the error. Don't stand there and double down on the lie. The librarians are "role model" figures to the children that use the facilities. In many instances, they stand in the role of teacher when they are leading programs for children. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not in the business of teaching my child that it is ok to lie and be dishonest. Unfortunately, my six year old autistic child was upset about the situation that occurred today. I had to have a very frank conversation with my child about what happened and how the librarian was dishonest. Luckily he has had some really great experiences with librarians at the other branches and I hope that will overshadow the...
Read moreI come to diaper day at the norcross library every 3rd tues .Every visit there are kids running ,screaming hitiing each other throwing toys fighting , coloring on tables, tearing up books and kicking around soccer balls in the childrens area not to mention jumping on the furniture and eating and dropping their food and drink everywhere while the mothers are sitting around talking oblivious to whats going on around them.I bring one of my twin granddaughters when i come shes 8 months she sits quietly in my lap not crying or being a problem. When i go to the Duluth location they have order over their there is none of this type of behavior happening nor at the Snellville location. Why are the staff members allowing this location to be romper room on diaper day .Alot of the mothers hold places for their friends to come to the front of the line after they show up 15 min before they start giving out diapers .Thats not fair to the mothers that have been there for hours patiently waiting. Passing out numbers doesnt help at all unless they are numbered and you go in sequence.Maybe you need to have them line up outside like the other branches do so the kids can romp and play outside and stop disrupting the library. For the staff to stand around and watch this behavior and do nothing is sad.Norcross get it together If the mothers cant control their offspring then maybe the mothers should come or bring them...
Read moreGwinnett County libraries are amazing and so far superior to most other libraries I've been to!! (comparing to Alpharetta libraries)
Building: The Norcross branch is LEED designed with native plants outside and functional, beautiful outdoor sitting space. Inside, there is a ton of comfortable & functional seating available all complete w charging ports.
There are plenty of meeting rooms and they even have a game room with a PS4!! The childrens area is lovely😭so cute and functional... seriously kudos to whoever designed the library... it looks amazing and design is just so practical for studying & reading. You can eat in most areas and they have a vending machine & Amazon locker. LOTS of computers & plenty of printers. They have a variety of English learner materials (classes, you can practice w a librarian, etc.) and they have a few shelves of books for Spanish-speaking kids!
This branch and Duluth branch also have extended hours which are AMAZING!! (If you're a library member, you can come in 2 hours before and after the library normally closes).
In sum, Gwinnett libraries are some of the best I've been to in terms of design & amenities. I hope that more libraries like these can exist elsewhere... all communities deserve something like this. Please visit and donate to libraries if you can
Lots of...
