I've only been to the Compton Family Ice arena a handful of times, all of them for Notre Dame Hockey. Prior to my most recent visit, I came out to see Notre Dame get beat by Minnesota twice across a weekend in 2020. Not the best result for a trip out to South Bend, but it was fun nonetheless.
This recent trip to see ND play Penn State was also similarly fun. Arrival at the arena was relatively easy, as we were able to park within probably about 300 feet from the main entrance. Ticketing was also simple - we had our tickets on our phone, had them scanned, and were into the general area within a minute or two.
Prior to finding our seats, we stopped by the apparel shop near the entrance. While crowded at the time, I was still able to get assistance with finding a sweater I wanted and was able to try it on (sadly still too small). The associate was very helpful through the whole process, something delightfully common with the other apparel shops at other locations on the Notre Dame campus.
There's not much that can be said about the game that can't be stated better elsewhere, but I'll do my best here anyways. ND hockey at home is a spectacle worth traveling for! Between the pregame spots and activities, the game itself, the fantastic pep band (I love me some good pep band) and everything else, both nights were very entertaining. Hockey Night in South Bend has never disappointed, and this particular weekend was no exception.
The only downside, and a small one at that, to the Compton Family Ice Arena on the whole is the size of the seats. I'm a big guy (6' 3", 250ish pounds) and like most sports arenas, I had trouble getting comfortable in these seats. The saving grace came from the fact that 1) neither game was sold out, enabling both of us to stretch out during the game, and 2) the staff had no problem with us wandering among the SRO locations. It was great to get up and change vantage points to view the games.
I'm looking forward to many more trips back for ND hockey in the years to come. Thanks again for a...
