24 Hour Fitness — Attraction in Oakland

Adding this after we all heard of 24/7 having to settle for millions for defrauding so many of their duped members-it was ALL OVER THE NEWS. Only allowing people w/ Google accts to "review" this trash outfit is discriminatory. It also won't allow me to give this facility or 24 H overall ZERO stars. But this location, once a clean Magic Johnson Gym has been trashed and is a pig stye. The staff are the worst. 0 stars to infinity. I wouldn't recommend this to even enemies or Trump. Not only are the bathrooms filthy 24/7, most weekdays there's no TP or toilet seat protective paper covers, no soap in either the sink/washroom or showers. They recently(reportedly to save money we're told) cut back all evening security guards patrolling this most dangerous area where many have had their cars broken into or stolen). One of the nicest members ever who's put up with this facilities unprofessionalism for years had to call OPD and authorities when his white truck was stolen in broad daylight, parked right in front of the entrance last Sunday ~6 am. My car and several others got keyed today. Bottom line, corporate and this location are going to be sued by various. Not that the security guards were always properly out there. Often at 5 am they were sound asleep in a chair inside by the front desk and hardly outside where they should've been working. What # GM are we on in the last year with the constant departure of staff, the most notable being Cornelius who said he got screwed on the way out(he'd been our best employee, looking out for members).

One of the front desk males bypasses the non-disabled bathrooms to use the clearly-marked disabled one, even when they're all empathy. Those of us who are disabled have watched him do this, cutting in front of us and taking the one disabled bathroom which I believe violates many ADA laws. Since Magic Johnson pulled his backing, this not-that-old facility has gone down the toilet. W/o security, the front desk people have zero protection, especially in the morning as we've had various non-members sneak into the club and even a gang tried to get into the women's locker room and shower area before one 68 yr old brave member stopped them-all on tape. Some members have been repeatedly told to STOP talking on their cells while working out on the cross trainers but continue to do so. The hot tub is often broken for months at a time, which many of us as disabled members count on. Was personally told "this club and corporate don't want to spend any money on the proper parts, so the little jet action it has will have to do." If a gym could get negative stars, it would be this dump(BTW, often no paper towels or hand sanitizer in the containers in the two large work out rooms) and the Tuesday morning cycling "instructor" appears to be incompetent, screaming loudly and has caused yet additional members to quit. Think there's just one Personal Trainer remaining and he reportedly only went thru their own "in house" training which probably is not up to standard of care. Just because a club is located in a dangerous part of Oakland, doesn't mean they have to cut costs everywhere, shirk responsibility and let the place fall apart ike this one. The 3rd or 4th GM who left(was stupidly promoted we heard-who'd promote this bozo?) around last winter("Matt" we believe his name was) always ran away from any of us who came to try to talk to him about this facilities TONS OF PROBLEMS, shower areas with feces on the floor, etc but "Matt" would always run away. How...

Update August 2025 : 24 never reached out. They dont care. Water fountain still leaks. Mirrors still broken. Weights still missing. I even reached out to support on the 24 website with no response. Half of cardio machines still broken without posted signs.

In summary two word to describe this location: INDEFERENCE motivated by GREED. This facility will never improve.

24 should be ashamed to have this location represent its brand. Half of all cardio are broken, staff can even be bothered to put a piece of paper sayings it's broken. All the lighter weights have been stolen. The mirror is cracked and as been duct taped back together for years. The staff just talk to each other all day at the front counter. People easily just sneak in without a membership. It is clear the franchise owner does not care for this facility but only making profit, by not making necessary repairs. The water fountain is now broken. Video included, no wet floor sign. OSHA would probably have a field day at this location. 24 can't even be bothered to put in a new nice water bottle water fountain. Honestly have not once seen anyone working here with any capacity of authority as a supervisor or manger. I think this location is run by minimum wage associates from open till close, with no supervision. The hardest working person here is the guy that walks around with the vacuum.

On several occasions have asked for management to address the 3 same individuals who blast their music so loud from their boom box in their duffle bag. I am always told there is no member of management on site they will be there tomorrow. Their solution was to write no loud music in marker on the mirrors. Despite this message being present, there is no one on site to enforce compliance.

Put simply this location has inspired me to invest my money in converting my garage into a personal gym. This facility needs a remodel, and new management that cares about the equipment and maintaining the peace for all patrons. Instead the owner has chosen complacency out of fear of addressing the bad behavior of 3 guest at the expense of ALL other patrons. Annual membership costs at least $200, revoking the memberships of 3 people who are in clear violation of the rules, and have no care for the well being of other patrons would not effect the bottom line of profit for this facility.

The membership fees at this location are being funneled into someone pocket. I'm just not sure if it goes to management in the form of bonuses, directly to the franchise owner, or to the share holders. One thing is clear, membership fees are not being put towards maintaining this facility.

If you look at previous bad reviews 24 reaches out stating they are striving to do better, but nothing ever changes. This trend goes back for years. The only thing keeping this gym going is there is no local alternative and no one wants to speak up for getting what they pay for with their gym membership. If 24 employs internal auditors they need to come to this location. The reality is it is probably cheaper for 24 to offer refunds to people who complain, than actually fix the problem. This facility will never improve.

Just signed up like a month ago. The showers here are either broken, don't work, doors don't shut, and they waist water. Some of the shower heads don't work, which in hand waste even more water. The showers only have two temperatures hot, or BURNING hot. The staff doesn't check the shower area ever. The mens locker room probably hasn't been mopped in weeks with some good o'l bleach. This place is pretty unsanitary. Even the machines have dust, dirt, and haven't been wiped down in months. Part of managing a gym is managing the cleanliness of a gym. Also, the pool needs to be cleaned more often chemically by a professional.They really need a cleaning crew, or start making that younger staff clean because sitting by the register with 3 people all day isn't helping the property. They should have one person, maybe two at the register, and the rest of the team should be cleaning machines to ensure that the gym is sanitary. They are lucky I am not the manager here. I'd be putting you all to work with a spray bottle and a nice rag. Sitting all day on my watch while the gym looks nasty would not happen under my watch. I wouldn't care who doesn't likes it either. This location is pathetic in cleanliness. Staff is nice but they could do A LOT MORE when it come to running the actual gym: checking machines, cleaning duties, walking around to see what you can do. Get some of those younger employees to work with some anti-bacterial spray and get them to cleaning those treadmills!!!!
