I've had the opportunity to visit several public libraries around the Bay Area, and while the Oakland Public Library has its merits, there's room for improvement that could truly elevate it to new heights.
Firstly, the library's size and amenities fall short when compared to larger libraries like those in San Francisco and San Jose. With only two floors, it struggles to accommodate the diverse needs of downtown Oakland residents and visitors. I believe that expanding the library to seven or nine floors, perhaps with a solar-powered roof, could transform it into a hub of knowledge and community engagement.
Expanding its infrastructure would also enable the addition of new features. One floor could house an indoor coffee shop, providing a cozy environment for patrons to read, study, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee. Another floor could host a restaurant, offering both sustenance and a vibrant space for gatherings and events.
These additions wouldn't only enhance the library experience but also provide a source of income for the library and the local community. Longer opening hours, akin to those in San Francisco and San Jose, would make the library even more accessible and accommodating to diverse schedules.
With these improvements, the Oakland Public Library has the potential to become a focal point for the community, drawing in more people and enhancing the cultural landscape of Oakland. Let's invest in its growth and make it a true gem of...
Read moreI like the books here. Also the computer keyboards are easier to write on than the Berkeley libraries. You now get 10 pages free printing per day. The computer will ask you if you want to extend time if there is enough computers available. Its a good feeling in here with the sunbeams providing warm lighting so you don't feel cooped up indoors. I like to go here to write.
I'm glad there's a drinking water dispenser to fill up a water bottle when I'm there all day. I think they should have a mobile showers and laundry unit parked outside to accommodate the unhoused population that goes to the library to better themselves. However it seemed fewer unhoused unshelled persons have been going here since the main library was closed during renovations. There are seed packets in the old card catalog to take...
Read moreWent into the library to apply to some jobs I couldn't upload my resume through Google drive for some odd reason it was denying me access which made it difficult for me to upload my resume so I put it on the local computer and I asked two people to help me upload it to my application and no one could help me it's so sad got the elderly don't have the same technology experience that I have not people my age have which leads me to say that they need to hire some young people at the library who have computer experience. They were also trying to kick me off the computer do you see that the library was closing in 10 minutes and I had told the old man that this was the last thing I needed to do and he basically ignored everything I was saying which brings me here to google writing...
