As always, the Olympia Farmer's Market is my happy place. The vendors are friendly and offer good advice for preparing the produce they sell. Excellent local bakeries and butchers have stands, as well as craftspeople with all kinds of gift wares and clothing. My particular favorites are Blue Heron Bakery, for biscotti and cookies, Mak's Produce for Bok Choy and other Asian veggies, and the dog treat stand, for pet approved goodies. Of course, there's a coffee stand as well as a wide variety of to-go food choices ranging from Mexican and East Indian to Belgian Waffles, Soba, and my favorite, Paella Pro. Most of the food stands offer weekly specials. A word about pricing: the vendors and restaurateurs are not offering flawed or low quality food. Additionally, they have no economies of scale like the national grocery chains, so prices may be higher. If this is an issue, check in at the Market Office; they may be able to help in some cases. As for the negatives: sometimes the live music is painfully bad, and often people stop in the middle of a walkway to, I don't know, meditate? Patience helps; so does noticing the direction arrows painted on the...

Read moreI went to the Olympia farmers market yesterday with a few friends. We went on a walk and were having a good time. It was a hot day so we ordered some lemonade and snacks at the open food trucks. Once we received our drinks we took a drink. There were people who were also drinking around us. Two couples with iced coffee and a vendor right behind us was eating her lunch. This is when it all went wrong. One of the door guards came towards us and screamed at my friend that there was no consumption allowed in the market. I was confused because right behind us a vendor was eating and he had walked past one of the couples that was drinking iced coffee. He looked right at my friend stared her down and repeated that there was no consumption allowed. She started to apologize and pull up her mask when again he repeated the no consumption issue. I am very disappointed in the market. He targeted my friend who was a person of color. He never said a word to the other two couples that were white or the vendor whom was also white. He never even said a thing to me and I am white he simply targeted my friend who was a...
