The play area in the children’s section is great! I would give it 5 stars. There are a lot of empty shelves in the children’s section though. I don’t know if 50% of the books are checked out but all of the shelves are at least half empty.
I would give the toddler storytime probably 2 stars. Mostly I have taken my son to the Ledding library storytime in Milwaukie. There is so much variety week to week and they do a craft each week afterwards that pertains to the theme of the day. Their space is small and crowded though. I have been to toddler storytime at the Oregon city library 3 times. The space they have for it is great but I’m not thrilled with the actual storytime or the teacher, Sabrina. Each week has been exactly the same just different books. So it’s the exact same songs every time. I guess if you do the same thing every time then you don’t have to prepare anything or be creative. Also I think maybe the teacher would work better with older more behaved children. I think it’s great to encourage children to sit and listen to a story but the reality is that they are toddlers. Toddlers are going to struggle with sitting still. They are going to shout at times, or run through the middle of the circle. After observing each of these three times, I get the impression that the teacher is frustrated with the children. It ends up feeling like a negative thing instead of a positive thing. I want my child to feel excited about storytime and learn to love to read. For these reasons I am going to stick to storytime at the...
Read moreHaving lived in many major areas around the country, this library is amazing. The programs, alone, are top notch for kids and adults. They are a growing program, so not everything is perfect, but they love suggestions (and take them into consideration). The librarians are helpful and super knowledgeable. The book supply has a long way to go before the shelves are full, but the new part of the library is fairly large - everything in good time - or just asking to have a book sent from another local library. The checkout kiosks are really cool and easy to use. The online app (just went live a few weeks ago) is the best library app I’ve ever used (East to west coast). It’s also been fun beta testing the app and getting great feedback from the librarian that the tech team is using my feedback. Oh, and when I found an inappropriate book in the kid section, I politely sent a note of concern. The librarian responsible for placing books contacted me to apologize and thank me for caring about location. Turned out the book was housed upstairs but the playaway was mislabeled for kids section. All fixed now. This library is on the rise for being a true community hub - community programming for all ages, outdoor events, passes for museums and such, and much much more. Truly a gem within the OC community! Don’t stop doing what you are...
Read moreI've come here multiple time a week for about 6 weeks now, and only today was I pushed out of the table I was sitting at for it being a "teens only" area, when I'm legit only 2 years older than a teenager. I was politely reading my book and a woman approached me, which has not once happened since I've been sitting in this same spot for weeks, and she told me I couldn't sit there because it's a "teens only section." And I was the ONLY ONE THERE. I felt like she was singling me out when there was no good reason to ask me to move seats, if there were a bunch of teens wanting to sit there, I'd understand enforcing the rules but I honestly don't see what the purpose of her having me leave was other than her not wanting someone to be able to watch her work in her little office? I felt honestly offended considering I was politely and quietly reading to myself. The PURPOSE of the library. I'd highly recommend letting this woman know that the rule doesn't have to be so strongly enforced when the person sitting there is hardly above a teenager's age, and no one else wanted to even sit there. She was a rude and very...
