I had a customer to visit in the area and decided to visit the John McLoughlin Home location, which had been moved a bit from the original location. I was thrilled to find the home and property in very good shape. It has been lovingly cared for. John McLoughlin was a Great Man with a Great Vision for Oregon. He was kind and generous and got along well with the natives. He married a Native by the name of Marguerite. She and her husband John helped many people who were coming to Oregon to settle. John McLoughlin also got in trouble with the Hudson Bay Company because he gave many, many settlers supplies which they couldn't afford, nor did they ever repay. His heart was generous so he got fired from Hudson Bay, but no matter, he made a name for himself and is the Father of Oregon. He was also a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Oregon City, before it was built at the present location. The Church Hall has a painting of him on the side and is not far from the McLoughlin House. He and his wife were originally buried at the Church Cemetery, which was later moved on site of McLoughlin House. The Barclay House is next door. Dr. Barclay was formerly Mayor of Oregon City, and was a good friend of John McLoughlin and was a Physician, first Coroner of Oregon, and Superintendent of Schools. NOTE: There is a Tunnel behind the McLoughlin home and if you go through that Tunnel you'll find a small Falls. You can walk down the expanse and look for a park nearby, but I think it would be better to drive to the park. Look it up on...
Read moreA great part of Oregon/Oregon City history. Staff are informative and the House has been wonderfully maintained and restored considering the 100+ year history (including the fact the House was even relocated from the flats in 1909 due to flooding). One thing I really appreciated is there is not overwhelming signage or velvet ropes. The staff are well versed and there is such a collection of furniture, art, and the accoutrements of daily life of life of the era and without such signs one can really get a feel for the house and its history. A true gem in a fascinating historic area. Thank you NPS for this as it is a unit of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. In addition the Barclay House next door even more information and a small gift shop. The small grounds are charming and you can walk to the promenade (which McGloughlin donated to the city that it be maintained as a park) and the Singer Hill...
Read moreInteresting historical site in Oregon City, and annex to Fort Vancouver National Historical Site in Vancouver, Washington. The former home of John McLoughlin, Governor of much of the future United States northwest (and western Canada) for England's Hudson's Bay Company, the home is an interesting historical side trip. The docent on hand had a terrific knowledge of McLaughlin, the house, and Hudson's Bay Company history. It is only open for tours on Fridays and Saturdays, and only during the warmer months of the year. (They close the site for the winter, but you can still walk around the outside.) At the time of my visit, I was told they may be closing the house soon so that some restoration work can be carried out. They said the planned work, once started, will take several years to complete. I gave the site four stars because the structure is in desperate need of that renovation. But it was still...
