We came here a couple weeks ago and had a great time with our 5-year-old. We heard about the unique orange sand and it really is beautiful. I grew up going to the Jersey Shore and have been to beaches all around the country (including Hawaii) and there really is nothing like this sand. The beach was busy, but not overly crowded, and it definitely seems to be a family-oriented beach (other than the few trucks driving up and down parading their flags with profane language). No lifeguards in this particular area. The waves were on the smaller side the day we went so we felt comfortable going into waist-deep water.
As off-roaders, we wanted to stop by Ormond/Daytona beaches since we don't have in-season drive-on beaches in our area... and it did not disappoint. This entrance was designated as 4x4 vehicles only and our Toyota 4Runner with all-terrain tires did perfectly fine up and down the beach, even in the softest areas. We were warned by the entrance attendant that the sand was extra soft that day. She pointed to a lifted F150 that was stuck in the sand earlier in the morning and a Ford Expedition was stuck at the entrance when we pulled in. We also saw another 4Runner nearly get stuck, but they were able to recover. All three of these vehicles had street tires. The Expedition and other 4Runner clearly did not have experience driving off-road and tried gunning the engine, which only digs you deeper into soft sand. Every Wrangler I saw also did perfectly fine, even with street tires.
If you're looking to drive onto the beach, definitely download the free Volusia County app which gives you live status updates on every drive-on entrance. Without it, we wouldn't have known that this entrance (along with a number of others) were closed for part of the day...
