A visit to Ormond Beach just would not be right without a visit to the Casements. Our group of four were in the area and we convinced them it is a must see. My wife and I had been there about ten years earlier and really enjoyed it. So on a beautiful early November day we made a visit.
Still very impressive with the times opulence, it was a refreshing view of history in the areas. Rooms, offices, kitchen, library, etc. One remodeled large room had pictures from the early days of racing on the beach.
Paintings, sculptures, desks, an elegant coffee server. It was all very fascinating to see. Also pictures of a disastrous fire that occurred there, and has been fully restored. The tour takes about 30-35 minutes, depending on how many questions you might have. The docent was very well versed on all the aspects of the home and the history. Hard to imagine being the richest man in America and being able to live in this fine house in the Winter.
After the tour, I made a donation to the Historical Society thar do the excellent tours. And my wife made a separate donation by purchasing a necklace from...
Read moreSo enjoy learning more about the history of our great country. Over the last few years I've learned quite lot about John D Rockefeller. What I've learned has greatly changed my early understanding of him. He was often looked at as a Robber Baron, he was anything but. Yes he was a very wealthy man, he also gave away half of what he made. His innovation help build and strengthen the middle class family. He also made things easier for the poor, providing low cost energy so they could heat their homes. He also loved nature and spent a lot of time enjoying it. When many corporations of his age were dumping waist into the environment, he refused to do the same. He encouraged innovation, developing a use for all the materials his manufacturing produced. So there would be no waist to pollute what he loved. He never experienced a labor dispute because he always paid his workers a fair wage. He cared about people and would often invite total strangers to hos outdoor parties by the beach. He may have been very wealth but he spent much of it to enrich the lives of others. Enjoy the housed, enjoy...
Read moreThe Casements is where once the world's richest man John Davison Rockefeller Sr. lived between 1918 and 1937(less than 2 months away from his 98th birthday). Mr. Rockefeller was a believer of social Darwinism in business and he deployed many unethical tactics to destroy/buy his rivals, build his oil and steel empire, and he was estimated to have a net worth of 1.4 billion USD upon his death. On the other hand, he was a devout Christian, and philanthropist, he gave a lot of money to the Church, institutes, universities around the world like the University of Chicago, Yale, Peking Union Medical College and many others. The Rockefeller Foundation is still a great name in philanthropy. He was labeled as "Robber baron". "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:24) At any rate, I couldn't decide whether John D Rockefeller is in heaven or not. I am fortunate to see this...
