The Casements is where once the world's richest man John Davison Rockefeller Sr. lived between 1918 and 1937(less than 2 months away from his 98th birthday). Mr. Rockefeller was a believer of social Darwinism in business and he deployed many unethical tactics to destroy/buy his rivals, build his oil and steel empire, and he was estimated to have a net worth of 1.4 billion USD upon his death. On the other hand, he was a devout Christian, and philanthropist, he gave a lot of money to the Church, institutes, universities around the world like the University of Chicago, Yale, Peking Union Medical College and many others. The Rockefeller Foundation is still a great name in philanthropy. He was labeled as "Robber baron". "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:24) At any rate, I couldn't decide whether John D Rockefeller is in heaven or not. I am fortunate to see this magnificent mansion.

Beautiful building and grounds.. However, as a student of architecture, I was disappointed in the fact that they didn't stay true to the original building when it was refurbished... The living quarters were great, but the meeting rooms and the meeting hall were so white and modern and soooooo out of place..(really you hang fairy lights from the ceiling???) The grounds were immaculate and peaceful.. Aside from the guy who decided to light up a cig next to the pond.. (please consider posting no smoking signs on the grounds.. Trying to enjoy the beauty of nature while someone blows nasty smoke around, then grinds the butts out and leaves it takes away from the ambiance)

Christmas at the Casements, the one-time winter home of John D. Rockefeller, is always a treat. We try not to miss the annual House and tree lighting ceremony. This year, the 40th anniversary event, was free and seemed to attract a larger than usual crowd. Volunteers are the key to the Casements, and to the Christmas event, which doubles as a fundraiser. The crafts are always a bargain. The baked goods are outstanding. If you have not made the annual event a tradition, you should.

A little disappointing - nothing is original. There was a fire and everything was destroyed. Only a couple of rooms are set up with period pieces. Most of the rooms are used for other things - offices, gift shop, dance room, art display, boy scout display, Hungarian heritage display, etc. There is an archive room with lots of information and photographs. At least it was free and our tour guide (Jayde - I think) was very informative.

I was surprised to see the number of ongoing classes & events held here as well as a lovely art gallery that has rotating exhibits. You can use an app to tour the house but I highly recommend touring with one of the docents. I did a Saturday tour with Jade and it was terrific -- she was very knowledgeable, had many stories to tell, and was always open to questions. A great look at another time period in Ormand Beach.

Lydia was an amazing tour guide. The Rockefeller and Flagler history was amazing. The location on the river has great views. Free parking in the lot next door. Street parking is also available. The decor of the home was amazing. You can only see half of the second floor and the third floor if you are on the tour. The tour is free but a donation is customary. The house is owned by the city.
