EDIT: Be careful. This is a breeding ground for Covid. Both my GF and I contracted covid from this extremely crowded event. The definitive review! My girlfriend and I seek out NYC area haunts every October and with quite a few haunted events under our belt (including the notable Headless Horseman in NY State), we finally had the opportunity to try Halloween Nights. Halloween Nights come with much controversy. Pouring over hundreds of reviews, I discovered that post-COVID, the event has been getting a lot of hate for not being as good as it once was. There was a Terror Behind The Walls feature removed and a good majority of reviewers say the event has gone downhill ever since. For that reason, take this review from the perspective of someone visiting the newest iteration and not having any background of the old. We booked the event in July, the day online tickets became available. We took a gamble on paying $25 more (plus fees) for the VIP tickets and I'll let you know whether that was a good decision for us or not in a moment. Our entry time was 6:30 pm on a Sunday in the middle of October. We ate dinner across the street and by the time we arrived at the Penitentiary entrance at 6:00, there was already a small line of 60 people lined up for general entry. A separate line for VIP Express Entry had also just formed, but we were among the first 10 people in that line. When we were let inside, the VIP people were given preference to entry (co-mingled with the general admission crowd), but that is where the express entry ends and that could be an issue. More on that in a moment. The Penitentiary is an excellent backdrop for this event as it makes for a very eery and foreboding atmosphere. Approximately five haunted houses take you through the smoke-filled, cell-lined corridors of the historic prison. Each house has its own "theme" with amazingly dressed up sets, eerie colorful light patterns, strobing effects, pulsating music, stunning animatronics, and actors who jump out at every corner. One of our favorite houses was done completely in 3D (you wear provided 3D glasses) and the the outward effects were off-the-charts. The VIP experience adds two free alcoholic drinks at two specified locations, one of which is Al Capone's cell, which made it worth the price for us. Normally, we would have had to pay for a separate tour to see his cell. Unfortunately, hard liquor drinks are only provided at one location, while the other is limited to beer and wine. Normally priced at $15, the complimentary hard liquor drinks are a rip-off for the small cup that you get. One drawback of the VIP experience is that it does nothing to give you express access to the haunted attractions once inside and this brings me to the main problem surrounding this event: there are too many people. We were lucky. We got there when it opened and were able to move through the lines quickly. We did it all within an hour (or 90 minutes to sit and enjoy our drinks). By 8 pm, we thought we would revisit some of the attractions we did, and were shocked by the size of the snaked lines to get into them. Wait times had to be 30 minutes per attraction. And then, when we exited, the general admission line just to get into the event was wrapped around the outside Penitentiary. Would we do this again? On the quality of the haunted houses alone, I would say, yes. I can only imagine how much better this was, pre-covid when they featured Terror Behind The Walls. However, the problem is crowd size. This is an extremely popular event and it attracts thousands every year. You can spend hours waiting to get inside the event, and then once inside, waiting in snaked lines to get into each attraction. It looks like people are moved as quickly as possible through it all, but it requires a lot of patience in waiting. Additionally, I agree with other criticisms that this has become an outdoor festival that pushes food and drink sales more than its haunted attractions.

Great fun place to go to and go through... It'd be more accurate to name this seasonal attraction 'Scares Behind The Walls' since virtually nothing about this place was terrifying save maybe the fine print waiver they make you sign in order to enter AND the condition of some the ridiculously unattended port-a-potties once you've entered. The creep factor is lost by the size of the crowd in attendance, so when buying tickets try to find a time when it's near empty so the cast members can focus their affect on you; maybe 5pm - 7pm? Don't worry if it's day or night, you are indoors for most of this, so try not to let nightfall be your deciding factor. Advice: You must wear a glow-in-the-dark necklace to maximize what little fright their is to offer. It's included in the price of admission, so you might as well get the most out of it. The fun factor though is amazing with your own crowd. Despite the lack of fear, our party of four had a fantastic time together. Bobbing and weaving through each of the spires filled with all kinds of prison guard ghouls and effects, from lighting to lack there of, from body parts to dentist chairs, from math to wobbly floors, it was all good fun. Advice: hold the handrail in the spin-room if you're eyesight is poor. Now, I don't mean to scare anyone off from going to this place with this review. I'll definitely go again. Just temper your expectations and you'll have a truly great time. Yes, it's pricey for what they're selling (a party of 4 is about $190, more even if you pay for the VIP, more still if you buy the photo package on the way out) but in the grand scheme of things, you'll have a whole lot of fun, so that's worth it. Honestly, if the scares were scarier I'd give it another half-star and if the port-a-potties were better maintained, I'd give it still another 1/2 star. *Rant* Makes no sense to me that with the amount of money they're raking in not to hire 4 people at $60 per night to cleanse these things once every half hour with some disinfectant and re-stock the T.P.! Parking advice: Pay online and you'll get indoor parking for only $13 at the Philadelphia Zoo's garage. Plus they give you a free bus ride to and from the penitentiary. And that is the perfect wind down as you and your group make your way back to the car. Especially true, if you're bringing the kids, or your lovely date back to the car as the kids can relax and you can snuggle a bit before your ride home. Yes, go and enjoy and have some great Philly fun at Eastern State Penitentiary! Then grab a cheese steak at D'alessandro's or lounge around Reading Terminal for some good eats. And if you want a bit more terror head over to Jackson, NJ and try out Gravity Hills. Perhaps not the greatest, but certainly better and 1/2 the price. Again though, don't go when it's too crowded. No photography allowed beyond bag checkpoint, so very few photos to post here.

Halloween Night at Eastern State Penitentiary is an experience like no other. From the moment I entered, I knew I was in for a spine-chilling adventure. The atmosphere was electric, and the option to intensify the experience by wearing a glow stick around your neck set the tone for an unforgettable night. One of the standout features of this haunted attraction is the interactive nature of the experience. The actors have the freedom to pull you away from your group (If you have the glowstick around your neck), leading you to one of the attractions within the penitentiary. This element adds a level of intensity and surprise that can be both thrilling and terrifying. However, it's important to note that when you opt in for this level of interaction, you will be separated from your group. While it enhances the scare factor, some may find it annoying as part of the fun is experiencing it with your friends. For me, this unexpected separation was actually the highlight of the experience. It intensified the fear and made me fully immerse myself in the haunting world of Eastern State Penitentiary. On a personal scale, I would rate this place 9 out of 10. It provided an adrenaline rush like no other, earning a perfect 10 out of 10 in that department. It's easily one of the greatest places I've visited for a Halloween scare. Although I didn't have a VIP pass, I found that it wasn't necessary. The lines moved fairly quickly, and the organization was impressive. The staff at Eastern State Penitentiary were friendly and accommodating, but the actors, as expected, were committed to their roles, ready to scare you at any turn. One thing to keep in mind is that the actors might push you to crawl through certain areas, which could be challenging for some visitors. However, this added physicality only enhances the overall experience. I highly recommend purchasing your tickets online in advance and arriving early to make the most of your night at Eastern State Penitentiary. It's a top-notch Halloween attraction that will leave you with lasting memories of a thrilling and spine-tingling adventure.

My wife & I go to state penn every year (5) it is NOT worth the money anymore. So many significant changes. You spend more time walking around the prison to find the next attraction than being scared. (Groups of 10) if you are not in the middle of the crowd there’s no interaction. MORE stops to drink/eat then scares. So instead of being a family friendly place you are dealing with obnoxious drinkers, completely ruining the atmosphere. There is a place to sit & pay($5) for a couple s’mores to roast- 3 seats around 3 fire pits/ 4-5 tall tables to stand- occupied by the drinkers. Entering under the gargoyle archway there are 15 actors going up to you-staring awkwardly- cutting in between you & your significant other holding hands- if we did not let go she prob would’ve aggressively unlocked our hands. Literally just a corner with purple lights & a poor kid playing guitar/ singing. Prob the biggest gig he has ever had. Poor thing. We asked an actor which way to go next & she told us depends on what you want to do & kept walking. Completely uncalled for. Another actor we asked told us exactly what is ahead/exit. One of the attractions is actually a yellow bus walk thru with one live actor- let me surprise you- he jumps up from sitting in the seat! So scary 😬🙄 the girl outside the bus was talking out of character about the people in front of us & saying how bored she was. I was actually scaring the actors- caught off guard they got extremely close to my face with a hiss or an awkward stare. It is not fun anymore. My wife is easily shook up & she was not impressed. The penitentiary is lacking passion. Just don’t do it. It is a big waste of $50+, not including the $20-30 to park if you don’t want to find a spot on the back streets. Id rather go pumpkin picking or drive an extra half hour to Brighton asylum.

Not sure why this is called "Terror Behind the Walls"? I inquired about a haunted night tour and this was immensely scourned by the staff at Eastern State Penn and the following is an excerpt from an Email I received from a Ms. Schiffman: "We no longer offer paranormal investigations or participate in projects that portray the penitentiary as haunted. We know this is an area of interest for many, but our mission drives our work. At this time, we are focusing our resources on maintaining and expanding programs that explore the penitentiary's history and connections to contemporary justice reform. Paranormal investigations (including the use of EVP recorders or other pieces of paranormal investigation equipment) are not permitted at Eastern State Penitentiary. Thank you for your understanding!" So having been warned via email, it was definitely a topic of taboo when I inquired of staff. They steered clear of ghosts, no one talked abt any crazy experiences and referred us to our educational recorders. When I asked why the night tour was more expensive then the day tour when they wanted to stay away from the ghost/scary theme? I was told the tour is exactly the same - but it's at night! ( Thank you Captain Obvious!) There's also the "Beer Garden" and paid sitting areas. Let me save you from the excitement: It's a few covered picnic tables with an awning overhead in the rec yard/baseball diamond outside. An inquiry in the same email quoted the "Hospitality Lounge" as the smallest space that could accommodate 15 people and for 1.5 hrs in this area - the going rate was $525! The experience was very disappointing for me overall. I've been told that the prison embraces the SPOOKY in October- so if you're into that, sounds like it'd be worth it to wait until then.
