I am currently a student enrolled at a University outside of Pittsburgh. I decided to take a class over the summer at Pitt. Sadly, I did not have a very good experience and would never take another course there. The Professor appeared to be either very new at teaching or a Grad student they hired to teach over the summer and had no experience teaching. He was very unsure of himself. He would often second guess his answers when a student asked him to explain the problem. He would also ask the students after class how we thought he was doing. He gave very few examples so the students basically had to teach themselves. His exams had material on them that we never went over in class.
The TA spoke broken English which made her very difficult to understand. She would start a problem when a student had a questions about it but failed to complete the problem in full assuming we knew the last few steps.
My advice would be to seek an education elsewhere or to speak to other students about instructors they had and could recommend.
My other advice would be that if you attend this University be sure to pay the course total in full. If you set up a payment plan they report you to the credit bureau as being delinquent.
Given the fact that this university has a good reputation, I thought I would have had a positive experience. I experienced nothing but...
Read moreI’m originally from Texas and kinda ended up here as a freshman on accident. All my dream schools rejected me or their financial aid was not pleasant. I have visited TONS of schools from Chicago, LA, NYC, ATL, TX + and all of them were “my dream place” it feels great now saying I go here because this place seriously is the best place in the world to me. I could NOT be happier here. An environment that cares about its students, throws challenges at you IF YOU WANT THEM and above all seriously a stunning and unique place. From the cathedral of learning, to its top notch education. Seriously this place is a hidden gem and I couldn’t be happier here. Don’t be fooled by its “public” status. Yes it is a public school but it gives other schools a run for their money at a seriously affordable price(assuming you get aid which is kinda on your part from academics). I can’t stress enough how perfect this place is to me. Even it’s imperfections like how it lacks grocery stores or sometimes lacks food or “cardiac Hill” all make really good stories and the school never stops improving. Is it prestigious? Not to the extent of other places. But will you have an awesome time AND a competent education that’s world class?? Yes! I sound like I’m advertising but I really feel that way and so do other students. BEST PLACE TO STUDY IN...
Read moreOK school but not worth the money. Unless you are from the Pittsburgh area and unable to relocate, I would go elsewhere. I felt this way about it since I was attending some 20 years ago. My house is 4 blocks away from the cathedral, and I've not seen anything over the past 10 years that would change my opinion. In the Pittsburgh area though, it's the best option unless you can afford Carnegie Mellon. I started at Duquesne, and Pitt is a much better school than Duquesne (with the exception of the music department). I think there is also a problem with the institution's moral compass, because it is supposed to be there to provide access to higher education, but charges 5-7000 bucks more than most large state schools for in-state students, and around 5000 bucks less for out of state kids. I suppose it has decided to go after the foreign student market because it's more profitable. They're supposed to...
