What started out as a decent experience at Devon Storage turned horrible after we moved our entire unit full of antique furniture, family heirlooms, art work and home goods out of our storage unit. We had been renting the unit for about 14 months after selling a lakeshore condo. We paid for the most expensive insurance option every month that was offered, $16.00. We moved everything out of the unit in two trips. We had piles in the garage for donate, piles in the basement for our son who recently moved to Chicago and finally a pile in the formal living room to absorb into our home. While I was organizing the pile in our living room I noticed our 3 large pieces of art work all had water stains on the back. The water lines all perfectly matched up. After turning them around one had MOLD growing on the painting. This particular painting hung in our son’s nursery 27 years ago. I planned on keeping for our grandchildren’s bedroom at our home. We immediately (less than 12 hours later) called the facility manager, Jenny, and learned that there had been roof repair due to water leaks directly above our unit. We sent photos of our damaged art work and Jenny took photos of the interior of our unit showing where water had been leaking into it. She was helpful in this aspect. Let me be clear, Jenny tried hard to connect the dots. She was apologetic, embarrassed and went out of her way time and again for us. The only bright spot was Jenny. Whatever this place is paying her, it’s not enough!
However, the insurance you buy is with a sister company of Devon, Xercore Insurance, so not a 3rd party. It seemed like a clear cut insurance claim however after several months of just trying to contact an insurance adjuster to get a claim filed, Devon ended up denying the claim stating that we had no pictures of our damaged items in the unit. This was their stance even though the unit manager Jenny had taken photos showing evidence of water in our unit. Not to mention we are captured on video taking the picture out of the unit the day before. Common sense question here folks: how long does it take for mold to grow? Does it cover a 4’x3’ picture overnight? I think not!
Needless to say, Devon self storage was a truly horrible experience. I have blasted both companies on all my social media platforms. As an Advertising Alum of MSU, the number one form of advertising is….WORD OF MOUTH! You’ve...
Read moreNew facility and clean. When things are running as they should, it is easy to enter the building and drive to our unit. The building seems very secure.
I really hate to give a bad review, but they ask people to give a good review while people are getting set up with their storage unit for the first time, so there are a ton of great reviews based on first impressions. My first impression was very good.
Unfortunately, there have been several issues with the garage doors. Three times over the past two months, it has been impossible to enter the building in my car. Instead, I was asked to park outside the building and haul my belongings through the building to my storage unit. I had arrived alone for what I hoped would be a quick drop off with my three very young children (including an infant), so this option is not only inconvenient- it is impossible. We’ve had to arrange additional trips without the kids to drop off our stuff, which is very inconvenient.
The customer service was good when I first signed up, but since has been completely unimpressive. No offer to help somehow, no discount of any kind for the inconvenience. Just “Hopefully things will be fixed in the next few weeks. You can take your things to another...
Read moreGo anywhere else - this place does not maintain their property. I recently moved out and had a 26' truck and a 6x12' trailer that I pulled into the facility, only to find that the exit gate was broken, and has been so for nearly a month. I asked the attendant and was told the repair people were "waiting for a part". That is BS in 2025 - companies like Grainger can have any part to you in less than 24 hours. There is no reason whatsoever that it should take a month to fix a rolling door other than negligence. I had to ask other people to move their cars, disconnect the trailer which was very heavy, push it by hand with 3 guys to get it out of the way, then figure out a way to back the huge truck out of the entry gate and then back in again with cars in the way to reconnect the trailer and exit through the entrance. Completely unacceptable, nerve-wracking and a total waste of my time. I will not rent from Devon in the future - there are plenty of other choices of facilities that maintain their properties where you won't have to deal with this kind of thing. ...
