Great atmosphere, great game environment, but I have a few points that I would like to highlight about the student section to hopefully shed some light on the situation.
I’ve been a dedicated BYU fan for years, but my recent experiences with the ROC Board team have left me incredibly frustrated (for those who don't know, the ROC board is a student-run group that is in charge of the ROC student section). The organization and fairness of the student section process need serious improvement. While waiting in line for a game, I started 20th in line, only to watch over 50 people cut in with Group 1, shoving me back past 70th. It’s chaotic and disrespectful, and the ROC Board does nothing to manage it.
Speaking of chaos, the pre-scanning of tickets before doors open is a terrible system. Once the doors unlock, it’s a free-for-all, hundreds of students rushing in at once. I was nearly trampled trying to get down to the bottom of the bowl, all because everyone’s obsessed with grabbing a front-row seat. And yet, 20% of those prime spots are already reserved for ROC Board members, many of whom don’t even show up until after tip-off, sometimes strolling in with friends or family in tow. I get it if they’re working the game and already seated, but reserving the best seats for board members who aren’t on duty is unfair. They should wait in line like the rest of us when they’re off the clock.
Then there’s the issue of seat-saving. I’ve seen people drape six hoodies across an entire row for friends who aren’t even in the building, sometimes not even in the same zip code, when doors open. It’s selfish and infuriating to lose a front-row spot you’ve waited hours for because of this. There should be a strict limit: maybe one seat saved for a significant other or friend, but that’s it.
Finally, the scheduling around women’s and men’s games is a mess. On days with a women’s game right before the men’s, fans who attend the women’s game should either be allowed to stay in their seats for the men’s game or at least join the front of the ROC line (as long as you have a Group 1 ticket). Forcing us to choose between supporting the women’s team and getting a decent spot for the men’s game is unfair, and it’s no wonder women’s game attendance is already so low.
The ROC Board needs to prioritize fairness and organization over privilege. Right now, it feels like the system rewards cutting, seat-hoarding, and insider perks while punishing the rest of us who just want to cheer...
Read moreI have a lot of history with the Marriott Center for over 25 years. It's a nice events center. I've attended many events here over the years from graduations, devotionals, church conferences, concerts, sporting events, competitions, etc. The only thing I have to complain about is the pricing for the National Amateur Dance Sport Championship that my daughter recently participated in as a ballroom dancer. First of all, as a performing dancer, even she had to pay to get in. It was a 2 day event and we were there maybe an hour or two max. We had to fork out $14-16 per person each day. That adds up fast. I'm a BYU alumni and no discount either. $5 bucks seems more fair & reasonable. The grandparents didn't even come to see her dance. They wanted to but as senior citizens they are on a fixed income. It may not be the Marriott Center's fault but someone seems to be raking in the cash whether it's BYU or those who run the...
