We make state capitols a priority on our retirement trip around the country. We're into the 18th month of spending 2 months in each state and love visiting capitol and learning about our countries beginnings. We really missed having a docent led tour as all other states have given. We're fine showing ourselves around museum style, but it's the tidbits of history, construction and the stories unique to the state and leadership that really bring it to life. If you visit, don't miss going up to the 3rd floor to see the old state library, geologist office and view the old house and senate chambers from the gallery view.
Our first impressions. When we walked up the sidewalk to view the exterior there were several vehicles pulled up around the capitol building. A couple were official marked cars and several others were randomly parked crooked, a couple up over curbs at odd angles. It wasn't a parking lot. There was nothing going on when we entered that required the haphazard parking that detracted from enjoying the grandeur of aproaching such an old, graceful piece of United States history.
We entered the open door and a uniformed man was on his phone talking with family. He pointed to a small table, we put our cells, keys and emptied our pockets. He pointed at it all and we picked it up and walked forward. There was an unwelcoming man sitting behind the desk to the left, he pointed to the rack of state house fliers. We were never welcomed or greeted as in other states. It was so odd.
After reading the flier we came to understand that not much of the daily business seems to take place here, some bill signings, official meetings and press conferences. There was a display table on the second floor, maybe a celebration of s religion with colored tissue paper draped on the 2nd floor rotunda area railing. We were able to stand just so to capture the original architecture and not the display.
Some of the "special" was missing when we toured the North Carolina...
