The cost of living has been continuously going up, yet graduate students aren’t even paid enough to live. The average rent in Raleigh, in higher crime areas, is $1300+. Living on campus is even more expensive. If NC State and the graduate school really cares about the mental health of graduate students, like they say they do, then rising the pay for GA/RA/TAs is a must. More funding in the form of scholarships and grants (not loans, which just disadvantage low income students even more) is also needed. A $26,000 annual pay is at the high range for graduate students, but most graduate students make way less. Having tuition covered is helpful for those who are lucky to get a GA/RA/TA position, but it doesn’t cover fees. Covering health insurance in the GA/RA/TA plans does nothing if low income students can’t even use the Student Blue (BCBS) insurance plan because of the co-pays and cost share. Many graduate students are too busy worrying about if they can make rent, buy groceries, stay on needed medications, etc., this does not promote mental wellness at all. If NC State and the graduate school are serious about promoting good mental health in graduate students, then sitting down and seriously looking at the financial needs of graduate students must be done. Many research studies support statistics that graduate students suffer from higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide rates than undergraduate students. However, graduate students have the least support. There have been several suicides from NCSU graduate students this academic year alone, however they aren’t reported by NC State because most graduate students live off campus, and suicides off campus (that are not within a NCSU affiliated living area) are not reported the majority of the time.
