To see this statue calls to mind the hubris of great kings and men of old. To quote the poet Percy Shelly's Ozymandias seems apt:

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!' Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Replace the sand and ruins with a harbor and ships and it's hard not to see the shocking similarities. Andre the seal was truly one of the most powerful rulers of ancient Maine yet even he, in all his vaunted glory, is nothing more than an epitaph of stone to the endless march of eons that ebb and flow like the very waters that now mark his tomb.

Also it's good for kids to take...

This is Fun and Historic Place on Top of It! I took my daughters to this location while on vacation. We started out by looking for a place to take a break and stopped here. Glad we did! We ended up staying for a few hours enjoying the scenery and more. The kids not only learned about it but they got to play and have fun. If you ever have a chance to go I highly recommend it for you and your family to spend quality...

Was a nice place to relax for a few minutes . We walked around and learned a little history of the area. There were lots of shells in the grass, im guessing from the docks being stored there during the winter. It definitely made it not puppy friendly. But the view was nice to sit and have lunch we watched the docks being put back in. It was a nice spot for a break. Watch that drive way it could be...

Beautiful seal sculpture, in Rockport Marine Park. Background: Andre was a harbor seal who spent his winters at the New England Aquarium in Boston and his summers in Rockport Harbor. Every spring for over 20 years the Seaquarium would release him and Andre would swim north to Rockport (150+ miles). It was always a high point for local residents when he reappeared. He was the honorary harbor master.

I was happy to see the sculpture of Andre. I had forgotten he was such a big part of so many peoples lives. Also the history of Rockport harbor is fascinating. This "working harbor" was unique in the Maine lime industry in the 19th century. My sister and I enjoyed the charm of Rockport. Sailing classes, etc. Many nice moments. Beautiful find. Clean and attractive park and pier for all ages.
