Doyle Park is one of my absolute favorite parks. I'm giving it 5 stars because it's close to perfect for me, but it may not be as good for everyone.
First, the not-so-great. UTC is a well off area, and Doyle Park is within walking distance of Westfield UTC (mall). I say this as somebody who used to always walk there and back. That being said, with well-off people, there are also some not-so-well-off people, especially at night. The park isn't well lit at night, so if you're the kind of person who feels uncomfortable with a homeless man (who has nowhere else to go) sleeping anywhere near where you're walking, that might be a deal breaker.
Further, there is a big space in the middle full of baseball fields. I don't play baseball (or any related sport), so to me, that is wasted space where I could be running around or having a picnic or something.
Now for the good.
The park is one of the closest parks to UCSD, far surpassing Mandell-Weiss in size (and also M-W currently has construction EVERYWHERE so good luck finding parking), and located comfortably off of Nobel Drive, one of the more main streets in the UCSD area. The park offers several amenities, including bathroms, tennis courts, baseball courts, and a playground for kids, and it is right by an elementary school. In the daytime, the park is extremely safe. I go there for 6am walks and there are already a half dozen people jogging around the perimeter. I go there in the afternoon and there are families sitting around, playing, walking, etc. During daylight hours, the dog park is almost always partially occupied. And even with all these people, I've never once seen the parking lot full.
The park offers a view (kinda) of some of the bigger buildings in UTC, and you can see the cranes constructing UTC to rise up to the growing population. The air is fresh, and even after what I said about the park at night, it feels safe to me 24 hours of the day, granted I'm a male college student.
If you're nervous about safety, or if you are wanting a picnic or party, or if you want a higher likelihood of seeing bunnies, I highly suggest Nobel Park, which is the only other comparable park in the UTC area, in my mind. If you want easy location, a park to walk around, or just a playground for the kids, Doyle Park is just as good.
For any UCSD students who may be reading this, there are (currently) a couple bus stops and even a UCSD shuttle stop within a couple minutes walk from this park, too. So if you're wanting to study outdoors, get fresh air, or catch Pokemon (it's good for Pokemon Go), this park is a great...
Read moreThis is a great neighborhood park with a lot to offer. The grounds are spacious and well maintained. There are indoor/outdoor basketball courts, an outdoor sand volleyball court, and a large outdoor playground area for kids. On any given day you'll see people out playing soccer, softball, cricket, rugby---I think there's even a badminton league that plays here in the indoor gym. There is also a dog park on the far end if you have a pup that needs some social time outside!
This rec center is a really nice community resource and it's good to see it being used to its full potential. If there were tennis courts here it...
Read moreThe park is okay I went down there only because when I looked it up on Google map It looked like a pretty good sized park to ride my skateboard around for my lunch! Then when I got there It had a pretty good size playground for the kids for sure It had a walk path that went around the park They had a lot of dogs I just felt like the pavement was very rocky they need to redo their asphalt in the parking lot I felt the cement was very noisy for a skateboard but all in all if you're there with your kids that'd be a great park but if your they're just to ride a scooter or a skateboard that's not a good...
