John Alexander Sheakley took a picture* of the “Uncle John’s Tree” Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) while driving west-northwest on Kezar Drive, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California, USA (GPS coordinates*) on the way home (1089 Shoal Drive, San Mateo, California, USA) from the University of California, San Francisco, Dental Center, Endodontic Clinic.

This Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) is named "The Great Norton." On May 3, 2018, the tree was measured to have a girth of 28 feet, 11 inches (8.82 meters) measured at a height of 2 feet, 4 inches (70 cm).

This Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) was planted around the year 1870 ± 2 years, which makes it around 151 ± 2 years old.

Each December, this Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa), a.k.a., The Great Norton (who also bears the nickname "Uncle John's Tree") is decorated with lights by the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department. Its offices in McLaren Lodge, built 1896, can be seen in the background of this image.*
