Until my friends from SF came to the South Bay to slurp some pho, I didn't realize I'd been eating fake Vietnamese pho all along. As a Southern person, I absolutely love slurping noodles, and the Vietnamese pho in the Bay Area is truly outstanding, renowned across the U.S. The South Bay is a paradise for pho lovers, with many Vietnamese people making the pho both cheap and delicious. My SF friends were amazed at how incredible Vietnamese pho can be. Here's a list of pho spots I've compiled with all my noodle-slurping expertise: 💜Pho Kim Long, though not as good after its renovation, still reigns as the pho king of the Bay Area. It has lots of high-quality beef and is affordable. Pho Ha Noi has successfully expanded with multiple branches, more refined than Kim Long but less down-to-earth. Pho 54 Pho Dao Leung Noodle specializes in dry noodles and pork bone soup. Pho Mai has average flavors but shines with its extensive menu and 4 AM closing time. Yummy Yummy has many dishes besides pho that are delicious. 🌟In San Jose, the further south you go, the less likely you are to find a bad pho spot. 💜Hue Beef Noodle Soup: Hue Restaurant is the best, with many tasty snacks. Bún Bò Huế An Nam has a rich broth, sweet taste, large portions, and is quite spicy. 💜Chicken Noodle Soup: Turtle Tower was the legend of Bay Area chicken noodle soup... not as good as before but still decent, with tender noodles and a fresh taste. (Just realized all these places are closed! Sad face 💔) East Bay Chicken Noodle Soup Chicken Noodle Soup 88, cheap, large portions, good value. Chicken Noodle Soup Family, many items on the menu are delicious. Wing Wah Chicken Noodle Soup ☝️The above are more Cantonese in flavor. 👇The following are more Vietnamese in taste, with lots of spices and toppings, generous meat portions, and sweet broth, not purely chicken soup flavor. Also includes Vietnamese Hainan chicken rice. Phở Gà Nhà has a sweet broth, super large bowl, and good chicken rice. Phở Gà An Nam's chicken is cut into neat pieces, can be paired with fried rice noodles, quite unique. Hai Nam has惊人的肉量, many toppings, and fragrant fried shallots. Pho Ha Noi's chicken pho is also decent. 💜Crab Noodle Soup: Nam Thanh Bánh Canh 3 has delicious crabmeat udon, rich broth, great texture. Que Ta Banh Canh Trang Bang crabmeat udon seafood noodles. Bún Riêu (Tomato Crab Noodle Soup) is available at the highly-rated pho spots mentioned above, all good, but the best I've had was homemade by my Vietnamese friends, even better with fresh crabmeat, easier broth than beef pho. Check out my cooking account @斯纳的投食日常 for recipes. 💜Teochew-style Vietnamese Noodle Soup: Focuses on seafood and pork, noodles can be rice or egg noodles, includes wontons and BBQ pork, fried noodles are also delicious, more Cantonese in flavor. New Tung Kee Noodle (潮记) Hai Ky (海记) Don't forget to ❤️🌟➕ this treasure list! All addresses are in the footer image. #HiddenGems #BayAreaEats #SanFrancisco

Not too long ago I posted a review of Bun Bo Hue I had at a Vietnamese restaurant and here I am, doing it again. I guess my last experience was not satisfying enough that I had to chase the BBH again. On the rare occasion that I decide for myself that I would like to have lunch, there is 1 guy I can generally count on for an ad-hoc sitting. My boy from 5th grade back in Milpitas who is still around with me these decades later. This particular restaurant is well known for their BBH, as it should be, since BBH is in the dang name! I chose this place because the location was convenient between my spot and his and we met up here. Google Maps tells me I was here 2 years ago and I do sort of remember it... but it is not completely familiar. This is located down the street on Story after you breakthrough to Little Saigon. It has indoor and patio dining, the patio being a setup due to covid but found there were far more people dining inside than there were outside and the place was mostly occupied but there was no wait. I ordered the classic BBH #1 on the menu and it ended up being a large because the difference between the small and large was not even a $1. Damn me... chasing values will add some to the waistline... It's all good. I just won't drink all the soup. My boy orders... a che (Viet Dessert) because he reveals to me that he had a huge bowl of Spaghetti right before I pinged him and was now just coming through to hang. Love this fool. A real solid friend. The soup... is solid. I'd say if you are just getting into BBH, this is a good starting point. It has enough character and flavor and is mild enough that you get a good sense of a good all around BBH. For me, it lacked a sharper flavor. Something I prefer out of my BBH. It came with a side of additional chili oil and Shrimp Paste and I had to add it all in order to kick it up a notch but I think it did a minimal job. My tolerance for heat is a bit high and I did not feel this was at all spicy. If you like the heat, I recommend you telling them you want it upfront when making the order so they can kick it up in the kitchen for you first. I am used to the kind my mom makes which uses chili oil that is ground to a fine sand and dark red. The beef was good and about a 6 on the tenderness scale and the included tendon was also acceptable. Neither were outstanding but both were quite lean. I prefer this because I am not a fan of animal fats on any of my meats. Marbling is fine. I don't eat the blood cubes. Nothing wrong with it, just not a fan. There was also the processed pork meat. A side of classic... freak... i don't even know what it all is... cabbage? Some rooty onion thing...? Some kind of leaf, bean sprouts and a lemon wedge. All of which I threw in making the serving an extra 33% bigger. I ate it all, it was moderately satisfying. I left the soup. I'm good with BBH for now. This place is decent and is recommended but I won't find myself going out of my way for it here nor will the name excite me when I want BBH. This place is fine.

I ordered the #1 Bun Bo Hue, and it came out in about 5 minutes. I've been here a few times over the past decade. Their broth can vary slightly from time to time, but overall, I think this is one of the best spots in the Bay Area for Bun Bo Hue. While the prices have gone up over the years, the portion sizes are still massive and packed with meat. The soup had a light lemongrass flavor, it wasn’t too spicy or salty. The meat was good, but this time around some of them weren't as tender as I expected it to be. They also provide a side of fresh veggies, shrimp paste, and sate (Vietnamese chili sauce). I added all the veggies to my soup while it was hot to soften them slightly. For a more savory flavor, I added a bit more shrimp paste. Just be careful not to add too much, as it can overpower the dish. Season to taste, add a bit and give it time for the flavors to kick in before adding more if needed. The same for the sate, I added more to give my soup an extra kick of spiciness.
