Pioneer Library System - Shawnee Public Library
update on 8/7/2025: guess what? I wrote this review last night at the Shawnee library and it was 9 pm when I was double checking I had everyone's name right with Katrina and I left my cell phone, I went to Tecumseh library this morning and realized I didn't have my phone, dashed over here at noon and guess what, it was sitting RIGHT where it was at my computer from the night before. So anyhow bashing the homeless folks, the few that are in the computer section, SHAME on you. They are hopefully honest and kind. And I am proud to sit with them! anyhow, continuing on..and thank you St. Anthony of lost things, for helping me get my phone!
What can I say? I LOVE the Shawnee Library. Yesterday someone called me homeless there and after I processed it, I realized it was a compliment. "The meek shall inherit the kingdom of God" and I have owned many homes over the years, repeat landlord here. I own a beautiful home in Tecumseh but I like to stay lowkey like my daddy who was an esteemed doctor but always stayed humble and kind, low key. So it was kind of funny...Moving on....
There are all kinds of folks at the Shawnee Library, rich, poor, homeless, old, young, students, kids playing xbox in the xbox area, kids and teens playing piano at the recitals. Old and young enjoying the digital makers' lab and that is what makes this library special. It's inclusive and it's awesome.
Mary Sims is the manager and Becky Roberts is the directing manager. Julie is manager of the wonderful HUGE kid's section, they have a whole side of the library to themselves and tons of toys and books and activities. All the librarians here are so approachable and kind, as are all the staff. GARRETT is wonderful, stays on top of everything, definitely moving up the ladder. Karen is really nice and helpful (celebrated her 30th anniversary in June), as is Rachel, just the salt of the earth and so friggin kind and sweet, there's Heather, and there's Katrina, as nice as she can be and helpful and been been there 12 years, the classy Shantal and Logan with the enviable hair, and Jessica and Channa.
I saw Channa yesterday go over and help some folks struggling on the computer without even being asked! They were soooooo grateful and left the library with their work completed and beaming faces. What to go Channa!
Let's not forget DOROTHY who is so sweet and kind. Celebrating her 48 year anniversary this year to Monnie and Dorothy celebrated her 30 year anniversary in June. Just stable wonderful folks.
The library itself is HUGE, with tons of great books, my favorite CDS on books and my 2nd favorite DVDs. There's a cool jukebox type of thing in the lobby where you can check out the LATEST movies. There's always a great selection of books. There's exercise bikes you can use while you are reading. Like you seriously couldn't ask for more of a selection. There's a computer area where you can work quietly and nicely and the folks working there are quiet and respectful and it's just enjoyable to work there.
There's an XBOX area for teens called TEEN SCENE and there's a HUGE KIDS area. The bathrooms are recently COMPLETELY remodeled and beautiful.
Let's not forget the GREAT security guards, run by JASON, also Greg at night and Joe. Also Keifer, who is a huge teddy bear and works weekends. Just awesome guys who keep the place safe but allow entry to All citizens which I so respect, as long as the folks are obeying the rules. If not, it's OUT! But that's cool.
If you need help with anything go to the Computer Service area and the librarians will help you. They are super approachable and friendly. The summer reading challenge ends mid August so make sure to sign up. It's also close to the SHAWNEE SPLASH POOL so I like to go back and...
Read moreThis is NOT a service animal friendly place. I was just told by Shawnee police that I was not allowed to have my service dog on Shawnee Library property because it was against Shawnee city ordinances. The officer told that I had to go and stand off the curb because it was off the property.
Are Service Dogs or Emotional Support Animals required to wear special patches, harnesses, or equipment? The ADA does not require any special equipment, clothing, or patches to identify your animal as a Service Dog. It is STRONGLY encouraged that all clients make their dog look like a legitimate service dog, including an appropriate vest or harness (our quick ship vest is an excellent choice), service animal patches, and the ID card visibly displayed – clipped to the harness or leash. You will thank us for this advice.
Must a service dog or Emotional Support Animal (ESA) be certified or registered? No. Although service dogs are NOT required by law to be registered, to make life easier for handlers with service dogs and ESAs. Registration eliminates 99% of hassles and confrontations from the public.
What do I do if I believe I’ve been discriminated against? If you are illegally denied access to or otherwise discriminated against in a place of public accommodation because of your service animal, you should remain calm. You should explain that the ADA (or state law if it provides greater protection) protects your right to be accompanied by your service animal in places of public accommodation. If that doesn’t get you admitted, you should ask to speak to the manager or supervisor, and then repeat the explanation to the supervisor. If you are still denied, you can politely offer to call the police to have them explain the law.Note:Some states still have statutes that are more restrictive than the ADA. The police are charged only with the enforcement of state, not federal law. You should know what the law is in the state where you are. If the public accommodation refuses to admit you and the state law excludes you (e.g., if they have an owner-trained dog for mobility and the state law recognizes only “guide and hearing dogs from accredited training programs”), you can file a complaint with the US Department of Justice or hire a lawyer to file a suit in federal court.Sometimes writing a letter to the person who owns the facility will result in an apology and a change in policy. In addition, disability advocacy groups might be interested in pursuing the issue on...
