Extra Space Storage — Attraction in Somerville

I had a very mixed experience with Extra Space Storage.

As other reviews have mentioned, Luis, Eric and all the staff I spoke with were helpful, responsive and the customer service was great as well. I was able to coordinate with Extra Space and my movers, and did not even need to be there for my cross-country move-in. Similarly, the move-out process was streamlined and easy. The facilities were clean and my possessions were stored safely for over a year.

Where I was very disappointed was in terms of their pricing model, which is clearly a function of their corporate business model (and being a franchise) rather than a reflection of the McGrath Highway location in Somerville. As my husband and I did not know how long we'd use the space, we went with a month-to-month contract. What I did not know and have not read in any other reviews, is that when you go with a month-to-month contract, they bump up your monthly storage fee every 6 months or so based on "market rates."

When I rented a 10' x 7' unit in June 2022, they quoted me $390/month and gave me the first month free. In September 2022, they sent me a notice in the mail that my monthly fee was being increased to $490/month the next month. I contested the increase and they were able to decrease my monthly fee in November back down to $416/month. Last month, in July 2023, I received another 30-day notice in the mail that again my monthly fee was being increased to $520/month the following month.

With this second increase, I decided it was time to do some pricing research. With a couple of calls to facilities outside of the Boston area, I secured a 10' x 18' unit in July 2023 at $272/month in Peabody, MA. I was amazed that I could secure a unit nearly double the size for less than half of what I would pay pending the rate increase, only 30 minutes outside of Boston. When I called Extra Space to price check, they were surprised to hear my current monthly storage fee and said so, until they realized in hindsight my contract was actually at their facility.

Overall, my two cents are that Extra Space Storage is ideal for shorter term storage needs as well as for customers for whom pricing is not a factor. Most helpful staff! On two separate occasions I visited this Extra Space Storage office for assistance with locks for a personal storage unit. The first time I needed to change a combination on a scrolling combo padlock, and the staff searched through their tools to find the right master key to help me out. They knew exactly what I needed and had me on my way in under 5 minutes. My first experience was so positive that when I needed a new lock for another storage space, I didn't even think about going anywhere else. When I got to the office, the lock I needed was no longer carried in stock, but the staff literally went and grabbed a spare lock that was no longer in use by the office to ensure I got exactly what I needed. This was also 10 minutes before closing up for the day, and they didn't hesitate to put what they were doing on hold to provide top notch customer service. I would like to just take a moment to extend my compliment and professional service, I received extra space storage. I’m moving to Marborough was going to rent a unit in Marborough but , stopped at your facility at 14 McGrath Highway and a Mrs. White I think that’s the young ladies last name was so helpful and helping me find a perfect unit and with the best price for my situation insisted on showing me multiple units. She was very patient and accommodating at all the times , she had a big beautiful smile and looked into your eyes when she talk at all time , she seem to be a very genuine person.
