A National Historic Landmark

The eight-acre plaza, designated in 1961 as a National Historic Landmark, is the largest of its kind in California. It was laid out in 1835 by General Mariano Vallejo, the military commander and Director of the Northern Frontier for the Mexican government.

The plaza is where the Bear Flag Revolt, which led to the birth of the short-lived Republic of California, took place in 1846. The Bear Flag monument, a California Historical Landmark, is on the Northeast corner of the plaza.

Historic Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of the series of 21 historic California missions, is located diagonally across the street from the Bear Flag Monument.

The Plaza also features four historic 19th-century hotels, including:

  1. Swiss Hotel (1830)
  2. El Dorado Hotel (1843)
  3. Toscano Hotel (1850)
  4. The Sonoma Hotel (1880)

Almost at the center of the plaza is the Sonoma City Hall, which was built on February 24, 1906.

Today, the plaza is a popular destination for visitors who come to enjoy the slow culture, good wine, and delicious food.

If you are visiting, you may want to make a short list of the historic sites I listed and more, and stroll around the plaza before you settle down for some nourishment! You will not be disappointed.

Additionally, the plaza is home to numerous charming boutiques and specialty shops where you can find unique gifts and souvenirs. Art lovers will appreciate the local galleries showcasing works by regional artists. For nature enthusiasts, the plaza's beautifully landscaped gardens provide a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle. And don't miss the weekly farmer's market, where you can sample fresh produce, artisanal goods, and local delicacies.

Whether you are a history buff, a foodie, an art lover, or simply looking for a relaxing day out, Sonoma Plaza offers something for everyone. So come and explore this gem in the heart of Sonoma County—you'll leave with wonderful memories and maybe a bottle or two...

Always fun to visit. So much history and many different types of shops to browse, including a book store which sells new and used books for all ages, greeting cards, stationary, etc. and many restaurants and wine tasting rooms. Also beauty salons. Ladies, if your looking for a unique piece of clothing or outfit, you will find it here. It will cost more but it will be fabulous! We love the museums (only a $3.00 fee and you can get in any of the museums that entire day!) and the huge, shady, park right in the middle of the square. Take a blanket or chair and read, rest, or eat your snack or meal there. Every Tuesday the park side fills with at least a hundred different kinds of vendors and there is a live band concert. It’s fantastic. Go early and take your seating and umbrellas if you want to sit on the outskirts of the park or in case all the shaded areas are taken. Tons if people show up. I’ve been to the plaza 4 times in 4 months (!) and have learned to: go early in the day as it gets hot in the afternoon, wear walking shoes, take your water bottle. Lots of people out on the weekends so I prefer to visit during the week. If you visit in the weekend, get there before noon time to beat the crowds and get a parking spot. There is plenty of free parking but most around the plaza has a 3...

California wine country is simply amazing. Sonoma Plaza condenses that experience into a walking tour that can be navigated in a single afternoon. Sonoma Plaza features world class wines, amazing restaurants (The Girl and the Fig is a must!!!) a couple of historical landmarks, shops and a few surprises. Sonoma Plaza is beautiful in its own. Arranged as a very walkable square, the center of the plaza is filled with trees and contains a small playground to help keep younger kids happy. Shops and restaurants surround the trees. Free parking is available, but expect a shortage of parking during busy seasons. Sonoma Plaza is not a substitute for visiting actual vineyards, but should be viewed as a destination it's own right. Sonoma Plaza is about 30 minutes away from Napa downtown, which offers it's own unique experience in a more urban setting. Call ahead for reservations especially during COVID-19...
