The commonwealth. I have been to thousands of concerts. I have never experienced such a complete lack of respect as My son and I experienced here. My son had purchased tickets on StubHub the day before the show. The tickets were never emailed for whatever reason. I really understand the fact we purchased from a 3rd party is not the issue. The woman at the box office window. Did not open the “box office” until 7:10 after the doors for the show were opened. We were 4th online because we wanted to handle the ticket issue before it started. The woman was the most unprofessional and dismissive she refused to look at my phone and we ended up leaving. Now here is the reason for my review. We were the only people at the box office window. And this woman who for some reason has the power to see we had paid for tickets. And the venue had been paid for the seats. Could have let us in to the venue seeing a mistake had happened the girls at the door wanted her to allow us in. The venue would not have been out at all they really had resold these tickets to stub hub. The place is a small venue. Not sold out. But the woman on a power trip. Who put my son in his place for the audacity he had to purchase from a 3rd party. Dismissed us and we left. I will never be back at this venue and will retell this story to everyone who I can. Sometimes in customer service you just need to look at people standing in front of you and do the right thing. We didn’t want free tickets. Just to come to see a band we love. This place allows the horrid woman to be the representative for the venue. She is nasty and not what you would want to have the public view. I know it’s a rant. But I’ll continue to bash this place for allowing 2 paying customers to walk back to our cars and leave. Disappointed and furious at such bad behavior. Thanx...
Read moreThe Commonwealth room itself is nice. The sound is poor, though. For Molly Tuttle and the band, the bass drum was so loud that it drowned out the vocals and the other instruments including an electric violin. That's pretty loud for a bass drum. I don't know if the bass drum is too loud on its own for a small venue like this or if it is mic'd up which overwhelms everything. The sound was okay when the drum set was not being played. Not great but at least tolerable.
This was the second Straight concert that had this issue at the Commonwealth room. The same thing happened with James McMurtry. This has ruined two straight concerts for me. This might be my last concert at the Commonwealth Room. The sound at the State Room is much better.
I received a response from the owner (I appreciate that) but I don't know how to respond to the response. Therefore, I am adding my response here.
I was leaning on the little wall right in front of the sound board. As I have thought about things, the bass drum must have been mic'd up. The bass rolled though us, which would take amplification. I initially thought the issue was with the bass instrument (there was a bass guitar and a standup bass), but when the band played with the bass guitar while the drummer was not playing, I could hear the bass guitar and its volume was actually pretty low. I'm not very sophisticated with band setup, but perhaps the bass guitar (and/or mike from the standup bass) should have been going through the subwoofer (with appropriate volume) instead of the bass drum. I'm assuming there was a subwoofer somewhere to cause the bass to...
Read more[EDIT] the owner responded and asked me to change my review (below). I understand that things can be complicated, but that doesn't change the fact that we had a couple thousand dollars worth of bikes stolen at this venue. We are good patrons and I like to think we bring good business to music venues in SLC. This was a hard moment for us, and needless to say we are very hesitant to go to shows here now. Original post: The Commonwealth Room has been open for a year and a half, and they still haven't installed bike racks (despite the giant piles of bikes all over). I recently went to a show and three of my friends' bikes were stolen because we had to lock them to a fence away from the venue. Cars parked in front of the fence and provided cover for thieves to come with bolt cutters and cut through our locks and steal our bikes. If there were bike racks in the vicinity of a venue and near some lights, this wouldn't have happened! Other than that, the venue is a basic room that's too tightly packed with a bad beer selection. I'm disappointed that bands are choosing to go...
