Wicked Licks — Attraction in Sturbridge

We visited today, a sunny May afternoon on Mother’s Day weekend. Not too busy as it had rained most of the morning. This was my visit with my husband and I was so pleased!

The ice cream is very good. Creamy and not sickly sweet. Fun flavors and some more traditional choices. Our favorite by far was the sorbet which they call Italian Ice. For us New Englanders, you might think it’s somewhere a little different like what you buy at the grocery store but it’s not. It’s a dairy free yet silky texture. This day they had lemon raspberry twist was was excellent. The owner let us know that the sorbet flavor varies which I think is nice as this is what I’ll get again next time. We camp in the area, so there’ll definitely be a next time.

There’s a good size parking lot but not sure how it would be if it’s very busy, as I imagine this place gets packed. They have a decent size lawn with seating, some of which is covered seating. And it might sound strange, but maybe the most interesting part is that they have relatively huge and very clean bathrooms, in its own separate building! For visitors coming just for the day, this can be a life saver, especially if you have young kids or seniors with you. Smart idea!

Overall, we found the staff and owner super friendly. The prices are not cheap, but neither is the experience, and I’d much rather help support, in earnest, a local small business than pay a little less for an inferior experience.

Originally from the mid west, I was intrigued and excited to try out the new Ice Cream joint in town.

Growing up, it was instilled in me the value of supporting our local dairy farmers. As an adult who has lived in New England for the past 17 years, I tend to stick close to the hometown creameries. I was disappointed to learn that they are not a locally sourced establishment.

My husband, bonus boy and I each ordered a “single” which was listed as 2 scoops, but were sadly only scooped out 1 in our cups.

When I asked the young man to clarify if what I had ordered was a single scoop or the single order, an older woman, whom I presume must be one of the owners quickly turned around and scoffed that she was going to update the board because too many customers were having too hard of a time understanding the menu.

Her attitude and the energy amongst the staff was definitely not the friendly hometown experience I was hoping to share with my family this evening.

Perhaps once the initial opening wave subsides and winter hits, they will be a bit more balanced with their portion sizes to cost ratio and appreciate the time, patience and patronage of the surrounding communities.

Four of us went last weekend. We heard that they have been busy so expected to wait a bit. We waited probably 15 minutes. The staff is young and learning the ropes, as is the owner it seems. I think most people are impatient but we are not. It was a reasonable wait and the expectation is as they settle in it will begin to smooth out. The ice cream is delicious. Some of the best I’ve had. The work they put into the building and grounds is nice. A good spot to chill and lick a cone. The owner told me that she is going to rewrite the board where it pertains to scoop cost. We noted it was a little confusing. So she is very open to improving. Thinking back about our experience a few other suggestions: Bigger scoops for the price. It doesn’t have to be a ton more but the scoops are small. The inside of the building could be a little colder. This would make waiting a bit easier on people and staff would appreciate it also.
