Josh has an undeniable gift. It’s not just what he has taught my daughter, but also the self confidence he has encouraged.
This two-fold approach of skill and confidence building is amazing to watch. We started out with lessons every other week and quickly increased to weekly because her learning curve was so dramatic. Josh’s passion and commitment to the sport is obvious and he has fostered that in our daughter as well.
It is a proud mama moment, watching her come out of her shell and laugh with him, fist bump, and then she’s dropping into the bowl pushing herself to nail that next trick down.
The very first lesson he taught her how to fall, the responsibility of watching out for other skaters around you, and using body language to communicate your intended movements. Then it was quickly on to going down ramps and rolling into the bowl in the following weeks. This is where we switched to weekly time with Josh. She’s now learning to maneuver the halfpipe, use her body to increase her speed, and to drop in. She’s able to roll out of the bowl and they are also working on the fly out. Getting her airborne is huge!
Josh has taken her step-by-step up a level each week. There are frequent high fives, fist bumps, a kind word of support and encouragement. He’s also very honest with her. He can only teach her as much as she’s willing to learn; she has to want it.
I’ve watched his other coaches and they are just as amazing. So if Josh is booked, never fear one of the other guys will be just...
Read moreLittle did I know when I took my daughter to the Sunnyvale skate park that I would find her next coach.
Josh has been awesome with my 10 year old daughter. She has been skating for just under a year and has had lessons from 4 other instructors. She also attended some skate camps. Sometimes the instructors were nice and quite friendly but they were not skilled in the art of teaching skateboarding. They all pale in comparison to the instruction she had received from Josh. I tend to hang nearby and listen to what he saying so that I can reinforce some of this stuff when we go back to the park near our home. I hear him break things down, explain things clearly and demonstrate it in an easy to digest style. He has the ability to be nurturing when necessary while pushing her to progress with every lesson.
If you ask our daughter who her favorite skate instructor has been, she says without hesitation - Josh.
I wish I would have found Josh a year ago. I know my daughter's skating would have been so far more advanced. With every lesson I can see growth in my daughter as a skater and as a confident young lady. I love the look of pride and happiness on her face when she lands a new trick. It...
Read moreAs a 40+ year-old first-time skateboarder, I had always dreamed of riding bowls but felt intimidated by it. One day, I wandered into the Sunnyvale skate park to give it a try and ended up taking a pretty rough fall. JB happened to be there teaching another student. He saw what happened and, without hesitation, came over to offer some kind, practical tips to help me keep my balance. That moment made a huge difference.
Since then, I’ve been taking lessons with JB, and I can’t recommend him enough. He’s incredibly patient and experienced, and he truly understands the physics of skateboarding. What sets him apart is his ability to break down complex movements into plain, easy-to-understand language—especially helpful for adults like me who are starting from zero. His instruction makes skateboarding feel far less intimidating and a lot more fun.
JB creates a welcoming, encouraging environment for skaters of all ages and skill levels. If you’re thinking about learning to skateboard—or picking it up again after a long break—JB is the...
