Suffolk County Historical Society is an amazing treasure trove of historical items and amazing photos. They are taken care of, categorized, and preserved well They receive general support from many sources for the management and sharing of our local history.
We are digitized and the entire photo collection should be online for viewing in some fashion or another.
Instead it was hard to access. A week in advance for a library appt.. and the 9 photos I wanted a copy of are restricted to use only on paper or digital for a fee of $20. I agreed to the fee, willing to have them added to our super busy 20 year website on our islands Gold Coast Mansions...( A site that is free to all listed mansions and and takes no advertising.. all a gift to the thousands who enjoy the site for decades. We pay all fees and hosting for years)... Despite that... was told it would be $1800 for the 9 photos of interest. and also that they did not want me putting the order in via email, or fax or in person, unless I came back again for another appointment.. to be sure they were correct. I think I took pretty good notes on the mansion names and photo IDs since that is what I do.
So now.. I dub the Suffolk County Historical Society the Suffolk County Hoarder Society. Availably to only a few as the years run out and our locals miss out These places need to be far more accessible to have any value to more...

It has a small but good whaling exhibit, several other good permanent exhibits, and at least three or four special exhibits each year. The director, librarian, and other staff and volunteers are excellent. As an educator for nearly 50 years, a Ph.D. in History, and a life-long Suffolk County resident, I strongly recommend visits to SCHS for families, students, and anyone interested in our county's history as placed into the overall history of America. Plan to stay a long time and...
Read moreBrilliant and well-run museum. As a native Long Islander, I feel incredibly privileged to have this museum locally, both as a resource and a refuge. All the staff are highly educated, helpful, and as friendly as can be. They're always happy to see people come in, and are attentive to any and all questions. I favor this museum because it displays ACCURATE Long Island history. It also publishes an excellent newsletter. It does not sugar coat anything, and it does not misrepresent the facts. If you want real Long Island history, come here. I feel you will appreciate it as...
