I'm annoyed at myself for waiting so long to come here. Better late than never, I suppose. My jiu jitsu professor down the street at Vamos MMA recommended this place last week, and MAN OH MAN am I glad I stopped by the next day. I've been here three times since.
When you enter the deli, you will note that the left side is reserved for dry and baked goods, as well as Polish pantry essentials.
I was there for what's on the right side; the hot food bar and baked goods section. I follow a vegetarian diet, so I can't speak to the quality of the animal based products they have, but judging from the excited looks and happy faces of the legions of regulars coming in, I would say they get solid marks in the kielbasa and stuffed cabbage department.
Feel free to ask the very friendly staff questions about the dishes, as they aren't labelled. It's easy to guess what 90% of them might be. They also offer samples without you asking, which is awesome. Mental note: Don't go on my extended fasting days, haha.
For you vegetarians:
While the dishes aren't clearly labelled as vegetarian, the staff are happy to point out which items of the day are free of meat and/or dairy.
A few that come to mind:
Entrees and Sides Cheese and potato pierogies at like $1.25 a pop. A ratatouille dish with zucchini, bell peppers, and carrots in a slightly spicy tomato sauce. Beyond yummy. Breaded and pan fried blintz stuffed with saurkraut and mushrooms. Insanely good. Beet salad. They appear to be steamed, and marinated in a vinaigrette of some sort. Delicious. Red cabbage salad with another vinegar type marinade. Two different kinds of carrot salad. One with horseradish, and the other with mayonnaise. Latkes: VERY good, but likely fried in seed oils. Was passing quite a bit of gas at jiu jitsu afterwards.
Sweet Treats Dessert blintzes: Sweet cheese and apple cinnamon. Pastries in jars: Rugelachs, and about half a dozen smaller cookies and other yummy looking treats. Various babkas from Northside bakery in Queens. Baked goods: Napoleans, crumb cakes, roll cakes. The mixed berry crumb is ridiculous, as is the apple variety.
They also sell dry goods and perishables: Breads, chips, chocolates, and other items from Poland.
There is a refrigerated section with beverages and other items. I'll have a look later this week and will update my findings.
I know parking on Main Street in Riverhead can be annoying, but park in the Chase lot if you plan to be in and out. Park in the municipal lots by the River Walk if you don't mind spending six or seven minutes to stroll over.
It's one thing to support a business that provides a great product or serving offering. What seals the deal for me is the warm, kindness, and friendliness exhibited by the staff. I'll be back in...
Read moreThe best and most authentic polish food on Long Island. We celebrated my daughters first birthday this weekend. The food from Polka Deli was phenomenal. My guest were amazed by how good, fresh and tasty everything was! And it made my heart smile. I ordered staffed cabbage, bigos, kielbasa, pork lion in horseradish sauce, chicken Marsala, turkey meatballs, pierogies, pork shoulder with veggies, blitzes, potato wedges. Everything was amazing. I wont order from anywhere else for my holidays, parties and even dinner with friends! Why cook at home if you can easily say that you made it lol - it taste so good. I recommend Polka Deli for 100%, Anna puts her heart into it and you can taste it in her food. Very accommodating and friendly staff and lots of polish delicatessen on top of the best homemade...
Read moreI appreciate having access to Polish food, however the stuff is not properly trained in food safety. They put the white kielbasa which is raw pork meat with other cold cuts. White kielbasa is wet and it soaked all other cold cuts with its juices. I had to throw it all away. It’s not only about the money, I was going for Easter with my family and everyone was looking forward to those Polish cold cuts. On my next visit I mentioned it to the lady, possibly the owner, she didn’t seem...
