As others have mentioned, prices are often much higher than online or at other record stores, but RPM is the only game in town. They do enough well and there are enough deals to be had that I can still give them a 5* rating.
The store is always immaculate. They've got a chill dog that goes with the chill vibe. The vinyl they put out is always clean and high grade. They have a room of quality hifi equipment for sale at fair prices. Their new arrivals are usually priced a bit more reasonably as well (check for bins by the register). What you find in the stacks is often what was priced too high in the first place. Many of the albums there have been sitting for years.
I think they've realized some of their prices are too high lately as they have started a discounted section of albums at usually $10 off their old price. I've found some great deals here. Their "vinyl graveyard" also has some decent records with some life left in em.
What they do best, though, is stand by their products (besides the graveyard vinyl, which is buyer beware). If your record has playback problems or a warp or some other problem, they will make it right. There are some sketchy record stores out there these days - this is not one of them. They're a great store witha knowledgeable staff and quality vinyl. Whether you live here or you're in town visiting and you are in to vinyl, you should definitely...
Read moreI frequent RPM every week or two and have been for the last 3 years. I travel for work (Chicago, Dallas, Orlando, etc) and always make time to hit a local vinyl shop (or three). I am happy to say that I have not been in another store that has the quantity and quality of vinyl as RPM. Riley, Kirt and Cade are all awesome and have significant vinyl knowledge and insight! Another plus is that RPM must have a solid reputation for estate collections as I've found albums there I never thought I'd find in Traverse City. My brother, an audiophile from Naples, FL, has been in the store a number of times and always remarks how lucky we are to have such a great audio asset. And note, Leland is the true head of the team as he strolls the aisles to ensure customer satisfaction. Lastly, they have carved a nice niche for classic audio gear - you will almost always find vintage Marantz, Pioneer, et al, fully restored. When anywhere near TC, stop in....you won't be...
Read moreThis shop along with Vertigo in Grand Rapids are the 2 best record stores in Michigan if not the midwest. Karma East in Indy ranks up there too. The new and used vinyl is mixed together by genre and is meticulously organized. Probably the best organized record store I've been to. The selection is huge and will take you hours to go thru so bring a list. A separate 45 room and a decent used equipment room add to the ambiance. So why only 4 stars? The prices are above average throughout. But that doesn't stop me from making 2 trips yearly even though I live 3 1/2 hours away. And I always leave with a few treasures that I may find on line for cheaper but I pick them up anyways cause the record is right in front of me and I support...
